Moving from IBM CommonStore to IBM Content Collector

IBM® CommonStore is the predecessor of IBM Content Collector. There are two CommonStore product installations, namely IBM CommonStore for Lotus® Domino® and IBM CommonStore for Exchange Server.

To move from archiving using IBM CommonStore to archiving using IBM Content Collector, you can either install Content Collector on the existing CommonStore server, or install Content Collector on a separate server. The necessary CommonStore parts are replaced by Content Collector Legacy Support.

To verify the Content Collector installation and move Content Collector to production before shutting down the existing CommonStore installation, you can also install Content Collector on a separate server and add the CommonStore configuration that is required for legacy support manually without deleting IBM CommonStore. This allows you to verify the Content Collector installation and move it to production before shutting down the existing CommonStore installation.

When you move from archiving using CommonStore to archiving using Content Collector, the two systems with their archived content cannot be merged automatically. This is because the underlying data models of the archived content differ. The only way that the archived content can be merged is by retrieving the CommonStore documents, removing the CommonStore archiving properties from these documents, and rearchiving these documents by using Content Collector.

After installing Content Collector, you can use all of the functions available in Content Collector on new documents. A subset of the functions on the documents that were archived using CommonStore is also available for use. This subset of CommonStore functions that is available in Content Collector to access archived documents in Content Collector is called IBM Content Collector legacy support. The documents that were archived using CommonStore are referred to as legacy messages in IBM CommonStore for Exchange Server, or legacy documents in IBM CommonStore for Lotus Domino. When referring to both installations, legacy document is used for legacy document and legacy message.

After you move from CommonStore to Content Collector, your mailboxes contain a mix of the following types of documents:
  • Documents that were archived by using Content Collector. All Content Collector functions are available when working with these documents.
  • Documents that were archived by using CommonStore. These legacy documents can be the full document or a stub, and can be processed only by using Content Collector legacy support. Stubbed legacy documents can be restored, and the restored legacy documents can be restubbed.
  • Documents that have not been archived. These documents still need to be archived using Content Collector. Depending on the way that legacy support is configured, this subset of documents might also include legacy documents that were processed to enable rearchiving using Content Collector.
