Business category properties

A business category is a high-level business area that helps to organize business terms. Business categories provided with IBM Industry Models are defined in Information Governance Catalog (IGC) as categories with properties that describe in business language the meaning of the business category. The business categories are defined below the Business Terms category and provide a navigation tree for browsing business terms.

A business category must:
  • Be business meaningful
  • Have a description must be clear enough to avoid ambiguity when assigning a business term
  • Be limited in number to facilitate the category assignment and to allow the user to easily remember the business category definitions
  • Not overlap with another business category
  • Be at a similar level of granularity as the other business categories
Since a business category is a high-level grouping of business terms, it is expected to be generic so that it is applicable to all its business terms.
