Replace the model 9116-561 or 570 disk-drive enclosure

You might need to replace a disk-drive enclosure in the server. Use the procedure in this section to perform this task.

If your system is managed by the Hardware Management Console (HMC), use the HMC to complete the steps for replacing a disk-drive enclosure. For instructions, see Replace a part using the Hardware Management Console.

Prepare the system

  1. Perform prerequisite tasks as described in Before you begin.
  2. Stop the system. For instructions, see Stop the system or logical partition.
  3. Disconnect the power source from the system.
    Note: This system might be equipped with a second power supply. Before continuing with this procedure, ensure that all power sources to the system have been completely disconnected.
  4. Open the rack front door.
  5. Remove the system unit front cover. For instructions, see Remove the front cover from the model 9116-561 or 570.

Access the disk-drive enclosure

  1. Remove the control panel as described in Remove the control panel with power off. Skip any steps that you have already completed.
  2. Remove the media device enclosure as described in Remove the media-device enclosure with the system power off. Skip any steps that you have already completed.
  3. Remove the system unit fans. For instructions, see Remove the system unit fan with the system power off. Skip any steps that you have already completed.

Remove the disk drives and disk-drive fillers

  1. Carefully label all disk drives and disk-drive fillers so you can later return them to their original locations.
  2. Unlock the disk drive handle by squeezing it and pulling it out toward you.

  3. Support the bottom of the disk drive as you slide it out of the system. Do not hold the disk drive by the handle.
  4. Place the disk drives in a location protected from electrostatic discharge.
  5. Pull any disk-drive fillers forward and out of the system.

Remove the disk-drive enclosure and replace the SCSI-IDE card

  1. Press down and pull out to open the handles on the lower edge of the disk-drive enclosure, as shown in the following figure.
  2. Pull the enclosure toward you to remove it from the system unit.

  3. If there is a SCSI-IDE converter card on the disk-drive enclosure, squeeze the tabs and remove the card from the enclosure, as shown in the following figure.

Replace the SCSI-IDE converter and the disk-drive enclosure

  1. Find the package that contains the new disk-drive enclosure and remove it from its protective package.
  2. If you removed a SCSI-IDE converter card from the disk-drive enclosure that you removed from the system, install the SCSI-IDE converter card on to the new disk-drive enclosure, as shown in the following figure.

  3. Insert the disk-drive enclosure into the system unit.
  4. Slide the disk-drive enclosure into the system until it locks into place, as shown in the following figure.
  5. Close the handles.

Install the disk drive and disk-drive fillers

Follow these steps to return the disk drives and disk-drive fillers to their original locations:

  1. Unlock the handle of each disk drive by squeezing and pulling it out toward you before you install the disk drive. If the handle is not all the way out, the disk drive cannot slide into the system unit.
  2. Align the disk drive with the guide rails in the system unit.
  3. Slide the disk drive into the system until it stops, as shown in the following figure.
  4. Push the disk-drive handle in until it locks.

  5. Repeat these steps to install all of the disk drives.
  6. Return any disk-drive fillers to their original locations.

Complete the procedure

  1. Replace the fans. For instructions, see Replace the system unit fan with the system power off. Skip any steps that you have already completed.
  2. Replace the media device enclosure. For instructions, see Replace the media device enclosure with the system power off. Skip any steps that you have already completed.
  3. Replace the control panel. For instructions, see Replace the control panel with power off. Skip any steps that you have already completed.
  4. Replace the system unit front cover. For instructions, see Install the front cover on the model 9116-561 or 570.
  5. Close the rack front door.
  6. Reconnect the power source to the system.
  7. Start the system. For instructions, see Start the system or logical partition.
  8. If you are a service provider performing this task, return to the procedure that sent you here.
