Memory riser placement and memory module balancing
Learn where to install memory risers and how to balance memory modules on 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6B, 8205-E6C, or 8205-E6D systems.
Memory riser plugging sequence
Two configurations are available for
the 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6B, 8205-E6C,
or 8205-E6D systems.
When installing memory risers, follow this plugging sequence depending
on the configuration.
Number of system processors | Plugging sequence |
---|---|
One system processor |

Note: 1 The 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C,
and 8202-E4D are only available with one system
processor.

Figure 1. Memory riser plugging
sequence
This figure shows the two-system processor configuration of the 8205-E6B, 8205-E6C, and the 8205-E6D. The 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, and the 8202-E4D are identical to this figure, but they include only the system processor that is associated with memory risers P1-C17 and P1-C18.
Memory module balancing for the 8202-E4B or 8205-E6B
Plug the
memory modules into the slots shown in the following table and Figure 2.
Notes:
- The minimum memory that can be installed is 8 GB, or two 4 GB dual inline memory modules (DIMMs).
- Memory module quads installed on the same processor module or memory card can be of different sizes. For example, one quad of 4 GB DIMMs can be on the same memory riser as one quad of 8 GB DIMMs.
- Memory modules installed on different processor modules can be different sizes and speeds.
- Each memory feature consists of one pair of DIMMs. Each processor module can have two, four, eight, or 16 DIMMs. A memory feature is not required in all processor modules.
- When two processors are installed, alternate installing memory modules between memory cards on the first processor module and the second processor module.
- After the first pair of 4 GB memory modules, the memory modules must be installed as a quad.

the memory modules into the slots shown in the following table and Figure 3.
Notes:
- Memory module quads installed on the same processor module or memory card can be of different sizes. For example, one quad of 4 GB DIMMs can be on the same memory riser as one quad of 8 GB DIMMs.
- Each DIMM within a DIMM pair must be equivalent and each DIMM within a DIMM quad must be equivalent.
- Each memory feature consists of one pair of DIMMs. Each processor module can have between 2 and 16 DIMMs, installed in pairs of two.
- When two processors are installed, alternate the installation of memory modules between memory cards on the first processor module and the second processor module.

Note: Because the voltage regulator modules (VRMs) are soldered to
the riser card, connectors C5 and C6 are not available on the 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6C,
or 8205-E6D systems.
