Adding additional SFP transceivers to the storage enclosure

You might need to install additional SFP transceivers to add more Fibre Channel connections to the storage enclosure.

Before you begin

Note: You must have the correct type and speed of small form-factor pluggable (SFP) transceivers. Using the wrong SFP transceiver might result in loss of data access.

Be careful when you are replacing the hardware components that are located in the back of the system. Do not inadvertently disturb or remove any cables that you are not instructed to remove.

Ensure that you are aware of the procedures for handling static-sensitive devices.

About this task

To install additional SFP transceivers, complete the following steps:

Procedure

  1. Read the safety precautions in the IBM Systems Safety Notices. These guidelines help you safely work with the system.
  2. Shut down all host I/O to the enclosure.
  3. If you are installing SFP transceivers in an enclosure that is located at the top of the rack, you might need to slide the enclosure out of the rack slightly to access the adapters.
  4. To install a new SFP transceiver, complete the following steps.
    1. If used, open the release handle on the SFP transceiver.
    2. Push the new SFP transceiver into the aperture in the adapter until it stops.
    3. If the SFP transceiver uses a release handle, close the handle to secure the SFP.
    4. Gently pull the SFP transceiver. If it is installed correctly, it does not move from its aperture.
  5. Repeat step 3 as necessary to install the remaining SFP transceivers.
  6. Connect Fibre Channel cables to the new SFP transceivers.
  7. To reset the adapters where you installed the new SFP transceivers, enter the svctask maintenance -action reset -enclosure x -canister y -adapter z CLI command, where x, y and z are the numbers of the enclosure, canister, and adapters.
You can use the management GUI to determine the enclosure, canister, and adapter numbers. You can also use the sainfo lsservicenodes CLI command to determine the enclosure and canister number, then you can use the lsportfc CLI command to determine the adapter number from the canister number.
  8. If you had to slide the enclosure out of the rack to install the SFP transceivers, return the enclosure to its original position now.
