Backing up and restoring IBM InfoSphere Information Server

To prevent the loss of data and to prepare for disaster recovery, you can back up and restore the components and system elements that are associated with IBM® InfoSphere® Information Server.

About this task

You need to back up only the services tier, engine tier, and repository tier, and not the client tier.

Because only local, user-specific customizations are stored on the client computers (that run Microsoft Windows), you do not need to back up the client tier. The procedures that are documented here do not cover backing up and restoring InfoSphere Information Server clients that are running on Microsoft Windows computers. Backup and restore is typically not required for client-only installations as only local, user-specific customizations are stored on client computers.

You must back up several system elements in the services tier, engine tier, and repository tier. For example, files, configuration data, and projects in the engine tier and services tier are linked to the metadata repository in the repository tier, all of which you must back up. Also, cross-database references often exist among the databases in the repository tier, which also require backing up.
