Installing and configuring
Learn how to install and configure the components of IBM Z Distribution for Zowe.
Before you begin
Before you start the installation, obtain the installation file and review the Planning for installation topic to get familiar with the installable parts. Also, ensure that your system meets the requirements. For more information, see System requirements on the Zowe documentation website.

Zowe Explorer (VSCode extension) client-side component | Bring up the Extensions view by clicking on the Extensions icon in the Activity Bar on the side of VS Code or clicking View -> Extensions from the menu. Click the More Actions (...) button. Then, select Install from VSIX and select the .vsix file that you downloaded. Restart Visual Studio Code. The extension is installed. |

Installing and configuring Zowe z/OS server-side component
IBM Z Distribution for Zowe is installed on z/OS by using the SMP/E RECEIVE, APPLY, and ACCEPT commands via SMP/E. The program number for IBM Z Distribution for Zowe is 5698-ZWE, and the FMID is AZWE001. You can use the sample jobs that are provided to run some or all of the installation tasks.

After successful installation of an SMP/E build, there will be a zFS folder that contains the unconfigured Zowe runtime <RUNTIME_DIR>
, a SAMPLIB library SZWESAMP
that contains sample members, and a load library SZWEAUTH
that contains load modules.
Next, you must prepare the environment and configure the Zowe runtime before you can start Zowe.
