Product Overview
Lotus® Expeditor Client for Desktop
and Client for Devices are software programs that provide a runtime
environment and integrated middleware components for extending many
enterprise applications to server-managed laptop computers, desktop
systems, and mobile devices. It provides a client-side, services-oriented
framework that can enable applications to run locally while the system
is disconnected from the network, and can synchronize data, transactions,
and applications after the system is reconnected. It also provides
client management services that can be used by network and system
administrators to deploy, maintain, update, and even remove software
from end-user machines, with minimal end-user intervention.
Installing and starting the client
on a desktop
To install the Lotus Expeditor Client for Desktop
follow these steps:
Note: - The installation programs are located in the desktop/install directory.
To start the client, click the
Lotus Expeditor Client shortcut on
your desktop (on Windows systems)
or in the Application > Office menu (on Linux systems).
Note: If you are using an
English version of Windows XP
and have set your Operating System's locale to another language, to
ensure that the correct language settings are applied during installation
and platform execution, an administrator can perform the following
steps:
- Open Control Panel > Regional and Language Options.
- Select the Advanced tab and change the Language for
non-Unicode programs option to the desired language.
- Click OK.
The Windows XP
operating system introduced the notion of "Use Fast User Switching"
to change credentials, but not fully log out and exit all running
applications, however this operating system features is not supported
when installing IBM Lotus Expeditor code. When installing Notes® on Windows XP or Windows Vista, the "Switch User" action must
not be used to change users before an installation of Lotus Expeditor. The install user should fully
log off any other users before performing an installation. Leaving
other users running on the system might cause permission issues and
could result in an incompletely configured installation.
Installing Lotus Expeditor applications on the desktop
To
locate and install a new application, follow these steps:
Note: During
installation, an application is called a feature. This is simply
a way of grouping and describing different functions that make up
a product.
- Click File > Application > Install to open the installation
wizard.
- Select the Search for new features to install option,
and then click Next.
- Add the location of the features and plug-ins to the Location
List using one of the following methods:
- Click Add Remote Location to add a remote location (Web
address), which contains the application. In the New Update
Site dialog box, type the Name and URL,
and then click OK.
For example, specify
a name for the Web site, such as CompanyA, and then
type the Web address of the site using the syntax, http://companyA.example.com/expeditor_updates
- Click Add Folder Location to add the location of the folder
that contains the application on a local drive or DVD. In the Browse
For Folder dialog box, browse for the folder, and then
click OK.
- Click Add Zip/Jar Location to add the location of the .zip or .jar file
(when the application is packaged as a jar or zip file).
In Select Local Site Archive dialog box, browse
for the file, and then click Open.
- After adding the location, click Finish.
The
client retrieves the features from the update site.
Note: This
action may contact a Web site to retrieve the features.
- When the Updates dialog box displays, select
the features to install. To view more detail for any feature, select
the feature and click Properties. Click Next.
- Carefully review the license agreements for the features. If the
terms of all these licenses are acceptable, select I accept the
terms in the license agreements. Do not proceed to download the
features if the license terms are not acceptable.
- If a feature selected for install includes optional features,
you are prompted as to whether you want them installed or not. Optional
features typically carry functionality that is not essential for proper
functioning of the main feature.
- Feature versions can be digitally signed by the company that provides
them. This allows you to verify more easily that the features and
plug-ins that are about to be downloaded and installed are coming
from a trusted supplier. If you are installing unsigned features,
you will see a warning prompt, giving you the chance to decide whether
or not to trust this feature. Features on the Lotus Expeditor DVD are digitally signed.
Click Finish to
allow the download and installation to proceed.
After installing
an application or feature, you are prompted to restart Lotus Expeditor for the changes to take effect.
Select Yes. The client closes and restarts.
Installing the Network Client Installer
The
Network Client Installer (NCI) provisions a server so that users can
install Lotus Expeditor Client
using a Web browser, or manage the Lotus Expeditor
Client using a Portal Server.
To install the Network Client
Installer, follow these steps:
Launch the appropriate program
for your operating system and follow installation instructions. The
installation programs are located in the
/nci/install directory.
- On Windows systems,
run the NCI setupwin32.exe program.
- On Linux systems, run
the NCI setuplinux.sh program.
- On AIX® systems, run the
NCI setupaix program.
- On Linux on pSeries®, run the NCI setupLinuxPPC.sh program.
When the installation starts, the installer checks
for previous versions of NCI. If a previous version is detected, the
installation upgrades NCI to version 6.2.
For more information
on using the Network Client installer, refer to Assembling and
Deploying Lotus Expeditor
Applications.
Upgrading from a previous version
During
installation on Windows,
the installer checks for previous versions of the client. If the previous
version is 6.1.x, then your settings will be upgraded and the installation
continues.
For Windows, RHEL
and SLED systems, if the previous version is 6.0, you must first migrate
to version 6.1.x, and then upgrade to 6.2.
Upgrade from prior
releases is not supported on Ubuntu.
Installing the client
on a Windows device
You
can install Lotus Expeditor
Client on a device or to a storage card in a device in one of the
following ways:
- From a DVD or local drive
- From a storage card
- From a Web site
During installation, you can choose to have Expeditor automatically
started when your device is turned on. This option means that Lotus Expeditor will consume approximately
7MB of memory when your device starts and will slightly lengthen the
time before your device is ready to use. However, starting Lotus Expeditor applications will
happen much more quickly because the Lotus Expeditor
environment is already started. If you choose this option and later
decide you want to change it, you can disable it using the following
steps:
- On your device, open File Explorer and browse to the folder
where Lotus Expeditor is installed.
- Select the "Disable Startup" link. The next time you power-on
your device, Lotus Expeditor
will not be started. You may use "Enable Startup" to resume the auto-start
feature.
Installing from a DVD
You can install the Lotus Expeditor Client onto your

Installing Lotus Expeditor applications on a device
Installing
applications on Windows devices
There
are three ways in which you can install applications that run on the Lotus Expeditor Client onto your
device. The method you choose depends on how your Client will be managed.
- Enterprise Managed Clients: Your administrator remotely
manages your device. In this case applications are automatically deployed
to your device. When an application is installed on your device, you
might see a popup message informing you to restart Lotus Expeditor. After restarting you can access
the new application from Start > Programs > Lotus Expeditor.
- Remote Update Site: You can use the Application Manager
to browse remote update sites and install applications from these
sites.
- Local Update Site: You can use the Application Manager
to view an update site on a storage card or locally on your device,
and install applications from the storage card or from your device.
Note: - Applications running concurrently in Lotus Expeditor share the Expeditor environment.
The first application that you run in Lotus Expeditor
might take longer to open than subsequent applications. Subsequent
concurrent applications will launch faster because the Expeditor environment
is already running.
- On Windows based devices, Lotus Expeditor application icons
in the Programs > Lotus Expeditor folder
might default to a generic program icon due to certain platform limitations.
To install an application using the Application
Manager:
- Open the Application Manager application.
- Select Install New Applications/Features. The installation wizard
is displayed.
- Select the update site from which you want to install the application.
Select Next. The Select features to install screen is displayed.
- Select the applications or features you want to install and select
Next.
- Review the license terms for the selected features. If the terms
of the license are acceptable, select "I accept the terms of the license
agreements". The installation starts.
- After installation completes, a message is displayed that confirms
that the installation is complete. Click OK.
Note: - When installing applications or features, the Free Space indicator
does not automatically refresh. Therefore, if you switch away from
Application Manager to delete files to make more room in the file
system, the Free Space indicator will not update to reflect the change.
- When installing, features, you may be prompted to close or restart
the Expeditor environment. Generally, you will not be prompted when
installing a brand new feature, but some types of features do require
a restart to work properly and so you should allow the restart when
prompted after an install operation. When performing multiple update
or uninstall operations, you may wish to ignore the restart prompt
until the last operation has completed. Then your new fully configured
environment can be started and used.

preferences window to customize preferences for installed applications
and services.
- Select from the main menu. The preferences page is displayed.
Lotus Expeditor provides a default
set of preference pages, which includes Accounts, Install/Update,
Password, Synchronization, and Windows and
Themes. An application that you install may provide preferences pages
specific to that application; you can access such preference pages
from the Preferences window as well.
The
preferences page also contains the settings for Enterprise Management
Agent, and Home Portal Account. It is here that you can specify that
the client should be managed remotely by an administrator. For more
information on Enterprise Management and Portal Management, refer
to Assembling and Deploying Lotus Expeditor

Language dictionary support
On Linux systems, dictionaries are
installed automatically for all languages, and only enabled if you
are in the correct locale. On Windows systems,
you must manually install dictionaries for the locales that you require.
To install dictionaries for additional languages, follow these
steps:
- Start the Expeditor Client.
- Click File > Application > Install.
- Select the "Search for new features to install" button
and click OK.
- Click "Add Folder Location..." and browse to locate the /desktop/updates/platform directory
on the client DVD or ISO image.
- Click OK twice. A new Folder Location named updates/platform is
displayed. Ensure that the location is selected and click Finish.
- Wait while the Update Manager processes your request. Expand the updates/platform update
site and select features to install from the search result list.
For example, select one or more language dictionaries under "Dictionaries"
and click Next.
- Select to accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next.
- Click Finish to begin the installation. When the Update
Manager has completed processing, you are prompted to restart the
client for changes to take effect. Click OK.
Enabling bidirectional text
A
bidirectional language is one that can write either right to left
or left to right based on context. Bidirectional text is supported
on Windows operating systems. Lotus Expeditor recognizes Hebrew
and Arabic as bidirectional by default on Windows systems. Hebrew and Arabic, and right-to-left
orientation is not supported on Linux operating
systems.
Set the orientation of the text that displays in
the workbench by completing on of the following steps:
Note: The
order of these options reflects the order of priority by which the
text orientation is determined.
- Use one of the following command line launch parameters to identify
the default text direction:
- -dir rtl – Specifies a right to left orientation.
- -dir ltr – Specifies a left to right orientation.
For example:
<install dir>\rcp\rcplauncher -dir rtl
Where <install dir> is the directory where you installed Lotus Expeditor.
- Use the -nl command line launch parameter to specify a locale
for the client. This command applies the appropriate text orientation
for the language associated with the locale you specify. If you use
the -nl option to specify the locales for countries that speak Hebrew,
Arabic, Farsi or Urdu, the workbench text displays right to left.
- The syntax of the command line is as follows:
<install_dir>\rcp\rcplauncher -nl he_IL for Hebrew
If no action is taken, the platform defaults to a left to
right orientation.
Installing and configuring
the integrated browser application
The Integrated Browser
application can be installed within the Lotus Expeditor Client. The Integrated
Browser application provides a general embedded browser application
that can be launched as an application within the workbench, or as
