Prerequisites for installing IBM Common Licensing on UNIX

Understand the requirements for installing IBM® Common Licensing on UNIX.

Before you begin

Read the System Requirements for Rational® License Key Server technical document to ensure that you understand the requirements.

Know how to download installation files from the IBM Website.

About this task

You must have your license key file when you install the IBM IBM Common Licensing. Go to the Rational License Key Center to order your permanent license keys. See Obtaining license keys with IBM Rational License Key Center for more information about the Rational License Key Center.

To configure the license server on UNIX:
  • If you are installing IBM Common Licensing version 8.1.3 or later, use IBM Installation Manager to install the License Key Server. Installation Manager is included with the installation files for IBM Common Licensing. You do not need to download the files separately. To obtain the files, download IBM Common Licensing from the IBM Website and extract the files. More information about installation is available in the IBM Common Licensing overview.
  • If you are installing IBM Common Licensing version 8.1.2 or earlier, use the license_setup script and licensing executables. To obtain these files, download IBM Common Licensing from the IBM Website and extract the files. Further information about installation is available in the Installing section.
Note: On Linux operating systems, the machine where the license server is being installed must have the following files:
  • Linux x86: /lib/ld-lsb.so.3
  • Linux PPC:

/lib/ld-lsb.so.3 for IBM Common Licensing version 8.1.2 and earlier.

/lib/ld-lsb-ppc32.so.3 for IBM Common Licensing version 8.1.3 and later.

If the files do not exist, create a softlink by using the following procedure:
  • Linux x86: Run the following command through root login, ln -s /lib/ld.so.1 /lib/ld-lsb.so.3
  • Linux PPC:

For IBM Common Licensing version 8.1.3 and later and to update to version 8.1.3, run the following command through root or sudo login, ln -s /lib/ld.so.1 /lib/ld-lsb-ppc32.so.3

For IBM Common Licensing version 8.1.2 and earlier, run the following command through root or sudo login, ln -s /lib/ld.so.1 /lib/ld-lsb.so.3

These commands create softlinks to an existing linker file /lib/ld.so.1. If /lib/ld.so.1 does not exist on your machine, you can use any other ldfile in /lib.

Requirements for Installing IBM Common Licensing.

  • You must have your license key file when you install the IBM Rational License Key Server. Go to the Rational® License Key Center to order your permanent license keys. See IBM Common Licensing overview for more information about the Rational License Key Center.
  • The Rational License Key Center sends the license file to an email account when you request a license. The name of the license file has the format license_for_server.upd. You must have the license file filename.upd stored in a known location, such as the $HOME directory, on the license server.
  • The license server can be installed on all UNIX platforms that IBM Rational supports.
  • The license server must be installed locally. The server starts a FlexNet lmgrd process and a vendor daemon process to manage licenses. For more information about these processes, see Getting started with IBM Common Licensing.
  • You do not have to install the license server as root. If you do install the server as root, you will receive a message that indicates a possible security risk during the installation process. Attempts could be made to access the lmgrd process through its TCP/IP port and run other programs with root permissions.
Note: For IBM Common Licensing 8.1.2 or earlier, if you install the license server to the directory /opt/rational and the directory is owned by root, run license_setup as root. For a non-root user, you can create the directory /opt/rational as root, change the directory ownership to a non-root user and run license_setup as the non_root user.
  • To check the connection between the server and clients, use the following UNIX commands: ping, arp, rsh, rlogin, or telnet.
  • For IBM Common Licensing 8.1.2 or earlier, use the license_setup script and licensing executables to install the Rational License Key Server.

License_setup creates the lmgrd start script start_lmgrd_on_HOST. To change the user who runs the license server, modify the lmgrd start script located by default in the directory /opt/rational/config. Update the line LICENSE_USER=user where user is the ID used to start the license server.

The lmgrd start script might be in the system start directory with the file name S98Rational. If the file S98Rational exists, modify the LICENSE_USER line in this file. If the file S98Rational does not exist in the system start directory, you can copy the file start_lmgrd_on_HOST to the directory and rename the file to S98Rational. Copying the file allows the license server to restart after a machine reboot.

The default system start directories are as follows:
    • HP-UX: /sbin/init.d/S98Rational
    • Solaris: /etc/rc2.d/S98Rational
    • Linux: /etc/rc.d/init.d/S98Rational
    • AIX®: check the inittab file for a reference to the start script. For example: /etc/inittab: lmgr:234:once:/bin/sh /opt/rational/config/start_lmgrd_on_HOST
