Creating Data Virtualization connection in Watson Knowledge Catalog

Watson™ Knowledge Catalog includes a connection type that is specific to Data Virtualization.

Before you begin

Ensure that Data Virtualization and Watson Knowledge Catalog are installed in the same OpenShift® project (namespace).

About this task

A connection is automatically created in the default catalog when Data Virtualization detects that the Watson Knowledge Catalog service is installed. Alternatively, you can create a connection to Data Virtualization in Watson Knowledge Catalog manually. To do so, you must use the Data Virtualization connection type.

Procedure

To manually create a Data Virtualization connection to a catalog:

  1. Click Catalogs > All Catalogs.
  2. Select your catalog and click Add to catalog > Connection.
  3. Select the Data Virtualization connection type.
  4. Enter the connection information required for your service.
Typically, you need to provide information like the database, host, port number, service instance ID, username, and password. You can find the service instance ID in the Connection configuration resources section on the Data > Data Virtualization > Connection details page. Optionally, to create a secure connection:
    1. Check the The port is configured to accept SSL connections box and specify the SSL port number in the Connection details page.
    2. Get the SSL certificate from the Data Virtualization Connection details page and specify it in the SSL certificate file field.
  5. Select whether to use shared or personal credentials.
If you choose to use personal credentials, users are prompted to enter their personal Data Virtualization username and password and their authorizations are evaluated individually. If you choose to use shared credentials, all users of this connection share the Data Virtualization credentials that you specify.
Important: If you choose to use shared credentials, any catalog collaborator, including collaborators with the Viewer role, can retrieve the connection credentials.
    Restriction:

When previewing Data Virtualization data assets in Watson modules in Cloud Pak for Data (for example, Watson Knowledge Catalog, Watson Studio, and Data Refinery), and in cases when data masking applies, the preview is subject to the data protection rules and catalog or project access control only.

Data Virtualization access control is not enforced when masking applies to the asset and you must define your rules to manage access to the catalogs, projects, data assets, or connections for access control in Watson modules.

Tech preview This is a technology preview and is not supported for use in production environments.

  6. Click Create.
The connection appears on the Assets page. To edit the connection:
    1. Click the connection name on the Assets page.
    2. Click the Assets tab.
    3. Click Edit the connection in the preview.

The Watson Knowledge Catalog service uses the DV_SYSID functional role to connect to Data Virtualization. The DV_SYSID role is defined automatically in Data Virtualization and is required for profiling virtual assets. This role is intended for internal service use only, you must not use this role for any other purposes.

What to do next

Optional: Enable the strict virtualization mode if you want users to virtualize only assets in the catalog with assigned business terms. See Enabling the strict virtualization mode.
