Tracking object activity

Auditing is the logging of custom or system events that occur for objects so that you can track critical activities. Most events on FileNet® P8 classes can be audited including those events that pertain to security, content management, and business transactions. The automatic logging of an event creates an audit entry in the audit log (the database Event table). Audit entries can also be programmatically created by custom applications.

About this task

The following diagram shows the sequence of cause and effect:

    initiating action => event fired on source object => audit entry created in the audit log

For example, you can configure an audit definition for a document class to automatically log audit entries whenever documents of that class are checked in. Checking in a document is the initiating action that causes the CheckinEvent event to fire, which in turn causes an audit entry to be logged.

  • Enabling audit logging
    To enable the logging of events that occur for objects in an object store, configure the following items: the object store, each class that you want to audit, and optionally individual properties.
  • Disabling audit logging
    Optionally disable event logging at a particular level, such as at the object store level (the highest level).
  • Viewing audit entries
    View the audit entries for an object by viewing the object properties or by querying the audit log. Alternatively, export audit entries to XML for reporting purposes.
  • Pruning audit entries
    Use an audit disposition policy to automate the deletion of audit entries that you no longer need. Audit disposition policies are useful to control the size of the audit log if you enable auditing for prolonged periods or if you save copies of the original or modified objects to the audit log. Alternatively, you can manage the audit log manually.
  • Subscribable and auditable events
    You can subscribe to or audit many Content Platform Engine events.
