FileNet P8 component relationships

The FileNet® P8 components are interdependent. Although most components do not require other components be running in order to start successfully, the absence of other components can affect processing.

As a general rule, start the components and related servers in the following order (reverse the order for shutdown):

The following table describes the relationships between components. Use this information to determine the optimal order for starting and stopping each component in your FileNet P8 system. In addition, use this information to determine the impact of stopping a single component for maintenance or other purposes.

Application Engine

None

Without Content Platform Engine:

  • Users cannot log in to Workplace.

  • Users cannot access object stores.

  • Application Engine cannot populate Workplace Task pages.

  • Users cannot use workflow-related Workplace applications.

  • Workplace users cannot update user preferences.

  • Workplace users cannot transfer or start workflows.

Without Application Engine:

  • IBM Enterprise Records is not available.

  • FileNet P8 eForms is not available.

Content Platform Engine

Directory service

Databases

Without Content Federation Services for Image Services, other storage device, or network or other file store:

  • Content Platform Engine cannot retrieve associated content.

Without Rendition Engine:

  • Content Platform Engine publish requests get errors if the Rendition Engine connection has not been disabled.

Without IBM Content Search Services:

  • Content Platform Engine full-text searches fail with errors.

  • Content Platform Engine cannot complete indexing jobs.

Without an SMTP mail server:

  • Content Platform Engine cannot notify users by email when specified process-related events occur.

Without a Rules Listener process on a rules server:

  • Content Platform Engine cannot process rules-based workflows.

Without Content Platform Engine:

  • Rendition Engine cannot publish completed requests.

  • Application Engine and Workplace XT users cannot log in to Workplace or Workplace XT.

  • Application Engine and Workplace XT cannot:

    • Cannot access object stores.

    • Process component queues.

    • Populate Workplace or Workplace XT Task pages.

    • Use workflow-related Workplace or Workplace XT applications.

    • Update user preferences.

    • Transfer or launch workflows.

  • Process Simulator cannot access object stores to retrieve or store workflow and scenario definitions and simulation data.

IBM Content Search Services

None

Without Content Platform Engine:

  • IBM Content Search Services cannot add new content for indexing.

  • IBM Content Search Services cannot retrieve content that has been indexed.

Without IBM Content Search Services:

  • Content Platform Engine cannot index new content.

  • Client applications cannot search on content that has been indexed for content-based retrieval.

FileNet P8 eForms

Application Engine

Without Content Platform Engine:

  • FileNet P8 eForms users cannot log in to Workplace or Workplace XT.

  • FileNet P8 eForms users cannot perform content-based searches.

  • FileNet P8 eForms cannot launch workflows.

IBM Enterprise Records

Application Engine

Without Content Platform Engine:

  • IBM Enterprise Records cannot store data models.

  • IBM Enterprise Records cannot launch workflows.

Without a Crystal Reports server:

  • IBM Enterprise Records cannot generate reports.

IBM Content Navigator

Without Content Platform Engine:

  • Users cannot log in to IBM Content Navigator.

  • IBM Content Navigator users cannot access object stores.

  • IBM Content Navigator cannot populate IBM Content Navigator Work View pages.

  • IBM Content Navigator users cannot use workflow-related applications.

  • IBM Content Navigator users cannot launch workflows.

Without Content Platform Engine:

  • Process Simulator cannot save scenario and simulation definitions.

  • Process Simulator cannot publish simulation data for analysis.

  • Process Simulator cannot access production statistics for use in simulations.

Without Application Engine or Workplace XT:

  • Process Simulator cannot access simulation-related applications that use Workplace or Workplace XT.

  • Rendition Engine cannot submit requests.

Without Content Platform Engine:

  • Rendition Engine cannot queue requests.

  • Rendition Engine cannot publish completed requests.

Without Rendition Engine:

  • Content Platform Engine cannot publish in HTML or PDF formats.

Rules Listener on a rules server

  • Content Platform Engine cannot process workflows that use rules.

Workplace XT

Without Content Platform Engine:

  • Users cannot log in to Workplace XT.

  • Workplace XT users cannot access object stores.

  • Workplace XT users cannot use workflow-related Workplace XT applications.

  • Workplace XT users cannot update user preferences.
