Variables tab

The Variables tab provides descriptions of the attributes of each variable in the data file. The Variables tab provides descriptions (when available) of the attributes for each variable in the data file. For example, while the Data tab displays the variable name (for example, inccat), the Variables tab instead provides the defined variable description (for example, Income category in thousands). When the Data tab presents the values 1 and 0 for the marital variable, the Variables tab displays Marital status as the variable name and Married/Unmarried as the variable values.

In the Variable tab:

  • Rows are variables.
  • Columns are variable attributes.

You can hide variables and modify variable attributes, including the following:

  • Variable name
  • Descriptive variable labels
  • Data type
  • Width
  • Number of decimal places
  • Measurement level
  • Descriptive value labels
  • User-defined missing values

Click Create variable to add new variables to the dataset.

All of the attribute values are saved when you save the data file.
