Volume labels

All tape cartridges are labeled with either an IBM or ISO/ANSI standard volume label. The internal and external labels on a tape cartridge must be unique and equal to one another, and the external label must be machine readable by the vision system in the library. The internal labels on volumes in libraries are automatically labelled by the operating system during the first use. The only valid characters allowed in a volume label are uppercase A - Z and 0 - 9.

See System-Managed mountable tape external labels, System-Managed mountable tape external labels, and Cartridge label for more information on external labels.
