Specifying whether to compress and encrypt the dump data

The ENCRYPT subparameter of the DUMPCLASS parameter directs DFSMShsm to encrypt data dumped to the dump class. DFSMShsm invokes DFSMSdss during the dump process with the encryption settings specified in the dump classes. For information about how to determine which encryption options to set in the dump class, see Chapter 6, "Managing Availability with DFSMSdss" in z/OS DFSMSdss Storage Administration.

The HWCOMPRESS subparameter of the DUMPCLASS parameter indicates whether DFSMSdss is to use hardware assisted compression for dump data before it is encrypted. Because encrypted data cannot be compressed, specify HWCOMPRESS(YES) to prevent a significant increase in the number of tapes required for the dump copies. HWCOMPRESS(YES) increases the CPU time consumed for the dump function.

The set of dump classes that constitute a dump generation (that is, the set of dump classes specified on the BACKVOL command or in the storage group definition) must have the same encryption and HWCOMPRESS settings, or the dump operation fails.
