Summary of changes for z/OS Version 2 Release 2 (V2R2)

The following changes are made for z/OS V2R2.

New

The MIGRATE command has new options to allow you to:
  • Cause class transitions, on SMS-managed volumes only, for all data sets on a specific volume, for all data sets in a specific storage group, or for a specific data set.
  • Move data sets to a different volume within the same storage group or to a new storage group.
Refer to MIGRATE command: Requesting a space management function and Command space management tasks

The new UPDTCDS command allows you to update specific fields within the control data sets. Refer to UPDTCDS Command: Updating the control data sets.

The new common dump queue (CDQ) is a queue of DFSMShsm dump requests from BACKVOL VOLUMES, BACKVOL STORAGE GROUP DUMP, FRBACKUP COPYPOOL DUMP, and auto dump. The CDQ is shared by multiple DFSMShsm hosts, and dump work is distributed among them, thus improving the throughput of the dump function. For more information, refer to Common dump queue.

Administrators now have the ability to distribute the processing of dump copies (BACKVOL DUMP, FRBACKUP DUMP, auto dump) to all DFSMShsm tape resources available in the group of DFSMShsm hosts. New parameters on the SETSYS COMMONQUEUE command define the group members (hosts) in the HSMplex for each dump function. These members are considered the functional group in the HSMplex. Refer to SETSYS command: Establishing or changing the values of DFSMShsm control parameters.

A new MINSTACK parameter is also added to both the DEFINE DUMPCLASS and BACKVOL DUMP commands, to specify the preferred minimum number of dump copies that the system should place on a tape volume. The existing STACK parameter (now also aliased as MAXSTACK) on both commands continues to specify the preferred maximum number. Refer to DEFINE command: Defining control structures for use by DFSMShsm and BACKVOL command: Backing up data sets from volumes or dumping volumes.

To simplify the analysis of fast replication errors during FRBACKUP and FRRECOV, DFSMShsm now collects all related DFSMShsm and DFSMSdss messages and records them in a unique fast replication message data set. Choose and control this option with the new MESSAGEDATASET(YES|NO HLQ(hlq)) parameter of the SETSYS FASTREPLICATION command. On the FRBACKUP and FRRECOV commands, use a MESSAGEDATASET parameter to specify the date and time that is used in the message data set name. Refer to SETSYS command: Establishing or changing the values of DFSMShsm control parameters, and to FRBACKUP command: Requesting a fast replication backup or dump version, and FRRECOV command: Requesting a fast replication recovery.
