z/OS DFSMS Software Support for IBM System Storage TS1140, TS1130, and TS1120 Tape Drives (3592)
SC23-6854-00

Keeping with the philosophy of allowing only write compatible tape devices to coexist in the same esoteric, TS1140 drives will be allowed in the same esoteric with TS1130 drives but not allowed in the same esoteric with TS1120 or 3592-J1A drives. The read-only compatibility between the TS1140 and TS1120 and 3592-J1A does not meet the write-compatibility requirements for a mixed esoteric. In a stand-alone (non IBM library) tape environment, the user must make sure all drives in a mixed esoteric will use a recording technology they have in common when they write data to tape. For TS1140 and TS1130 drives the common recording technologies for read and write are EFMT3 and EEFMT3.
