DFSMShsm, a z/OS functional component, automatically manages low activity and inactive data in both system-managed and non-system-managed environments. DFSMShsm also provides automatic backup and recovery of active data in those environments.

DFSMShsm can use the encryption-capable TS1120 tape drive (3592 Model E05, 3592-2E) for all functions. DFSMShsm normally uses non-WORM media (MEDIA5, MEDIA7, MEDIA9) for non-ABARS functions. DFSMShsm uses all media, including WORM (MEDIA6, MEDIA8 and MEDIA10) for ABARS processing. DFSMShsm can use the WORM media for non-ABARs processing if specifically allowed by your installation.
