JES2 capabilities and functions

JES2 (in conjunction with VTAM®) is the link between the Time Sharing Options/Extensions (TSO/E) user and z/OS®. As such, it is very externally oriented–it is visible to the data processing personnel and provides the ability to specify and tailor many installation-specific functions through JES2 initialization statements and JES2 commands.

This topic provides an overview of the following major functions JES2 provides to manage its job input/output responsibilities for z/OS; all of which are under system programmer control:

Getting work out of z/OS
Selecting work to maximize efficiency
Offloading work and backing up the system
Supporting advanced function printers
Providing security.
