Searching backwards through a file

z/OS UNIX System Services User's Guide

To specify a search string for a backward search through the file, use the ? command in the same way as /. If you just type a ? without anything after it, vi searches backwards for the most recent word or phrase you searched for. When you search backwards, the n command moves the cursor backward to the next occurrence of the string, and the N command moves the cursor forward.
