Navigation in location and asset hierarchies

Locations and assets are often defined in hierarchies. When you need to specify a value from one of these hierarchies, you can view a graphical representation of the items to select from.

The Drilldown window is available from the DetailMenu on the Asset, Location, and some Belongs To fields. You can use the drill-down feature to complete some fields when you create records. For example, when you create an asset record, you can complete the Parent and Location fields by selecting Detail Menu > Open Drilldown.

The Drilldown window is also available from the More Actions menu.

The location hierarchies that are shown in the Drilldown window are created in the Locations application, and the asset assembly structures are built in the Assets application.

Standard Drilldown window

You use the Drilldown window to view the assets at a particular location or to view the location of an asset.

In the standard Drilldown window, you can select a location, then switch tabs to view the assets at that location. Alternatively, you can drill down to an asset and then switch tabs to see its location and the systems that location belongs to.

Optional single hierarchy view

Administrators have the option to enable a drill-down view that displays both assets and locations in a single hierarchy. The option offers additional features, including the ability to display the following data about assets and locations:

  • Locations, which are organized by systems
  • Assets
  • Spare parts of assets
  • Preventive maintenance items for locations
  • Preventive maintenance items for assets
You can use drag-and-drop for asset or location nodes in the hierarchy to complete the following actions:
  • Move an asset to a new parent asset
  • Move an asset to a new location
  • Move a location to another location that is in the same system
You can also select an asset or location and right-click to copy and paste it in a different spot in the hierarchy. Only assets and locations can be moved. You cannot move spare parts or preventive maintenance nodes.

When you select a location node, all systems that are associated with the location are displayed. When you select a location node and select a specific system, the hierarchy displays all ancestors of that location in the system that you selected.

When you select the Open Drilldown option from the More Actions menu, you can select an object. Then, in the Drilldown window, you can click OK and choose to go to the selected object. This option is not available when you select Open Drilldown from the Detail Menu for fields.

The optional, single hierarchy view is available only if your administrator configured the system property that implements this option.
