Work order statuses

The status of a work order indicates its position in the processing cycle. The status determines which actions can be performed on the work order. For example, if the work order is approved, it has a status of APPR and the tasks can begin.

WAPPR
The work order is waiting for approval. WAPPR is the default status for work orders that are created in the Work Order Tracking, Changes, Releases, and Activities applications.
APPR
The work order is approved and the work can begin.
WSCH
The work order is waiting to be scheduled. WSCH is the default status for work orders that are created in the Preventive Maintenance application.
WMATL
Materials must arrive before the work can be performed.
WPCOND
The work can be performed only when the condition of the plant is suitable. For example, certain work might require that the plant is shut down.
INPRG
The work is in progress. INPRG is the default status for work orders that are created in the Quick Reporting application.
COMP
The physical work is completed.
CLOSE
The work order is closed. Inventory reservations for items that were not used for the work listed on the work order are removed, and the work order becomes a history record.
CAN
The work order is canceled. You cannot cancel a work order if the work is already in progress or if actuals are already reported.
HISTEDIT
The work order was edited in history.

Effects of changing work order statuses

Work orders can be controlled by a workflow process, which can lead to automatic status changes.

Child work orders can inherit status changes from their parent. Inheritance of status changes is controlled by the Inherit Status Changes check box.

If you are using process flow control, you can ensure that the status is inherited from the parent work order to the child work order. To allow status inheritance, you must activate the mxe.app.wo.flowControlStatusInheritance setting in the System Properties application. Two statuses can never be inherited with process flow control; the Flow Start and Flow Complete statuses. Flow Start and Flow Complete are INPRG and COMP, by default. You can change the default status settings in the Organizations application, by selecting Work Order Options > Work Type and specifying values for the start status and the complete status.

The following table shows the effects of changing the status of a work order.

Change to status Effects
APPR (Approved)
  • The work plan items are reserved in the Inventory application and in the cost and rate data.
  • Rates can be changed in the Inventory application, the Labor application, or the Tools application. If the rates change, the work plan reflects the rates in effect when the work order was approved.
  • You can no longer delete the work order.
CAN (Canceled)
  • Work orders that are not started are canceled.
  • Work orders that have no actuals reports are also canceled.
  • Canceled work order become history records.
CLOSE (Closed)
  • The work order is finalized.
  • Inventory reservations for unused items on the work order are removed.
  • The work order becomes a history record.
COMP (Completed)
  • All physical work that is associated with a work order is finished.
  • If you planned to move or modify an asset on the work order, the move or modification occurs when the status is changed to COMP.
INPRG (In Progress)
  • Physical work on the work order is currently in progress.

The following table shows the possible changes to the status of a standard work order. However, process flow control can restrict which status changes are possible.
