Installing the Tivoli Storage Manager device driver to Solaris Zones

The Tivoli® Storage Manager device driver supports the Solaris Zone feature, available with Solaris Version 10.

About this task

You can install the Tivoli Storage Manager device driver in the global zone or any non-global zone. When you install from the global zone, the full device driver package is installed to the global zone. When you install from a non-global zone, only device driver tools are installed to non-global zones on the system. The operation is the same in both types of zones. The Tivoli Storage Manager device driver level in the global zone must match the highest level of the server running on the same host system in any zone. Only one version of Tivoli Storage Manager device driver is supported in the global zone at a time. Versions of the device driver tools running in non-global zones must be at the same level or lower than the level of the device driver installed in the global zone.

If you are installing the device driver package to a non-global zone, devices must be mapped by a root user from the global zone to the non-global zone before they can be used. Devices installed to the global zone are available for immediate use.

If you are using the Tivoli Storage Manager device driver or the IBMtape device driver to control tape drives in the global zone, you can run the rmstdev utility to detect and delete device special files created by the Oracle Solaris st device driver. If these files are not deleted, conflicts can occur if more than one device driver tries to access a drive and data can be overwritten.

The Tivoli Storage Manager device driver package includes the device mapping commands devadd, devlist, and devrem for Solaris Version 10. These commands allow you to add, list, or remove devices for specific Solaris Zones.
