Purpose
Determines the information that appears in the symbol table.
Defaults
Static variables and unreferenced typedef, structure, union, and enumeration declarations are not included in the symbol table of the object file.
Parameters
- unref
- When used with the -g option, specifies that debugging
information is included for unreferenced typedef declarations, struct, union,
and enum type definitions in the symbol table of
the object file. This suboption is equivalent
to -qdbxextra.
Using -qsymtab=unref may make your object and executable files larger.
- static
- Adds user-defined, nonexternal names that have a persistent storage class, such as initialized and uninitialized static variables, to the symbol table of the object file. This suboption is equivalent to -qstatsym.

Examples
To compile myprogram.c so
that static symbols are added to the symbol table, enter:
xlc myprogram.c -qsymtab=static
To
compile myprogram.c so that unreferenced typedef,
structure, union, and enumeration declarations are included in the
symbol table for use with a debugger, enter:
xlc myprogram.c -g -qsymtab=unref
