Installing and uninstalling SDK Java Technology Edition Version 8.0 on distributed operating systems

IBM® WebSphere® SDK Java™ Technology Edition Version 6.0 is no longer in service. Using IBM Installation Manager, you can optionally install IBM WebSphere SDK Java Technology Edition Version 8.0. For new installations of WebSphere Application Server 8.5.5.11 or later, Java SE 8 is installed by default.

Before you begin

Notes on Java SDK:
  • [8.5.5.14 or later]Starting in version 8.5.5.14, Java SE 8 is the default Java. When updating to 8.5.5.14, any existing profile that uses Java SDK 6 is replaced by Java SDK 8. You can continue to use Java SDK Java Technology Edition Version 7.0 and Version 7.1, but no service can be provided after the end of support in July 2022, which could expose your environment to security risks.
  • For new installations of version 8.5.5.11 and higher, the default Java SDK is Java SE 8. Java 8 is the recommended Java SDK because it provides the latest features and security updates. You can continue to use Java SE 6, but no service can be provided after the end of support in April 2018, which could expose your environment to security risks. If you install version 8.5.5.11 with Java SDK 8 as the default, you do not need to install the Java 8 extension.
  • WebSphere Application Server Version 8.5.5.9 and later support IBM WebSphere SDK Java Technology Edition Version 8.0. This package is not available on the product media or on IBM Passport Advantage®.

The com.ibm.websphere.IBMJAVA.v80 offering will be deprecated, and no fix packs or interim fixes will be provided for this offering after March 2020. If this offering is installed with WebSphere Application Server Version 8.5.5 after March 2020, uninstall it and switch to the default Java SE 8 SDK provided by the WebSphere Application Server package in the same package group. With the default Java SE 8 SDK, you continue receiving Java SE 8 SDK support, including security updates.

You can install or uninstall IBM WebSphere SDK Java Technology Edition Version 8.0 for the following offerings:
  • Application Client for IBM WebSphere Application Server
  • DMZ Secure Proxy Server for IBM WebSphere Application Server
  • IBM WebSphere Application Server
  • IBM WebSphere Application Server Trial
  • IBM WebSphere Application Server - Express®
  • IBM WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment
  • IBM WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment Trial
  • IBM WebSphere Application Server for Developers
  • IBM WebSphere Application Server for Developers (ILAN)

Restriction:
  • Installation Manager console mode, which is included in Installation Manager Version 1.4.3 and later, does not work with WebSphere Application Server Version 8.5 offerings on systems other than z/OS®.
  • The Installation Manager web interface, which is included in Installation Manager Version 1.8.0 and later, does not work with WebSphere Application Server Version 8.5 offerings.

About this task

The WebSphere Application Server offering installation package determines whether Installation Manager installs a 32-bit or 64-bit version of IBM WebSphere SDK Java Technology Edition Version 8.0.
  • If the WebSphere Application Server installation package has a 32-bit version of IBM WebSphere SDK Java Technology Edition Version 6.0, Installation Manager installs a 32-bit version of SDK Version 8.0.
  • If the WebSphere Application Server installation package has a 64-bit version of SDK Version 6.0, Installation Manager installs a 64-bit version of SDK Version 8.0.
  • For DMZ Secure Proxy Server for IBM WebSphere Application Server, which has only a JRE, Installation Manager installs an SDK Version 8.0 architecture corresponding to that of the JRE.
  • [Solaris]IBM WebSphere SDK Java Technology Edition Version 8.0 is not supported on the Solaris SPARC 32-bit architecture. If you want to install the SDK Version 8.0 on Solaris, you must install it on a 64-bit product installation package on the 64-bit Solaris SPARC architecture.

    Because Application Client and WebSphere Application Server Express installation packages can have only a 32-bit architecture, IBM WebSphere SDK Java Technology Edition Version 8.0 cannot be installed with these offerings on Solaris.

Notes on logging and tracing:
  • An easy way to view the logs is to open Installation Manager and go to File > View Log. An individual log file can be opened by selecting it in the table and then clicking the Open log file icon.
  • Logs are located in the logs directory of Installation Manager's application data location. For example:
    • [Windows]Administrative installation: 
      C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\IBM\Installation Manager\logs
    • [Windows]Non-administrative installation: 
      C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\IBM\Installation Manager\logs
    • [Linux][AIX][HP-UX][Solaris]Administrative installation: 
      /var/ibm/InstallationManager/logs
    • [Linux][AIX][HP-UX][Solaris]Non-administrative installation: 
      user_home/var/ibm/InstallationManager/logs
  • The main log files are time-stamped XML files in the logs directory, and they can be viewed by using any standard web browser.
  • The log.properties file in the logs directory specifies the level of logging or tracing that Installation Manager uses.
Notes on troubleshooting:
  • [HP-UX]By default, some HP-UX systems are configured to not use DNS to resolve host names. As a result, Installation Manager might not be able to connect to an external repository.

    You can ping the repository, but the nslookup command does not return anything.

    Work with your system administrator to configure your machine to use DNS, or use the IP address of the repository.

Note: If you install IBM WebSphere SDK Java Technology Edition Version 8.0 and then remove it later and profiles or commands still use these Java versions, errors occur. You can reinstall IBM WebSphere SDK Java Technology Edition Version 8.0 to fix these errors.
