Introduction to migration from Version 8

Migration is the process of upgrading from one DB2® release to a later release. Migration also refers to the process of changing from one migration mode to the next.

You can migrate a Version 8 subsystem that is in new-function mode to DB2 10 without starting the subsystem in DB2 9.

Important restrictions:

A data sharing group that is migrated from Version 8 to DB2 10 cannot have any DB2 9 members.
If you start a Version 8 subsystem migration to DB2 10, you can fall back to only Version 8.
If you start a Version 8 subsystem migration to DB2 10 and then fall back to Version 8, you cannot subsequently migrate the subsystem to DB2 9.

Migration modes for DB2 Version 8 to DB2 10
Migration from Version 8 to DB2 10 new-function mode includes five DB2 modes. Four of these modes are differentiated from the modes that are part of migration from DB2 9 to DB2 10.
Migration to conversion mode from Version 8: Summary
After you load the DB2 libraries and run the installation CLIST, you can migrate your Version 8 subsystem to DB2 10. When you finish migration, your subsystem is in DB2 10 conversion mode from Version 8.
Falling back to Version 8: Summary
Fallback is the process of returning to your previous release after successfully completing the catalog migration to DB2 10 conversion mode (from Version 8 or Version 9). A successful migration means that migration job DSNTIJTC completed successfully. You can fall back to Version 8 only if you migrated from Version 8.
Remigration from Version 8: Summary
Remigration, which is migration to DB2 10 after falling back to your previous version, is simpler than the initial migration process.
Migration to enabling-new-function mode from Version 8: Summary
After you migrate to DB2 10 conversion mode from Version 8, you must migrate to enabling-new-function mode from Version 8 before you can activate new-function mode.
Migration from enabling-new-function mode from Version 8 to new-function mode: Summary
After you migrate to enabling-new-function mode from Version 8, you can migrate to DB2 10 new-function mode.
Reversion to conversion mode* from Version 8: Summary
You can revert to conversion mode* from Version 8 if you encounter problems after migrating to certain DB2 10 modes.

If you want to temporarily prevent the use of new function after you migrate to DB2 10 new-function mode, you can revert to enabling-new-function mode* from Version 8.
