Installation scenarios

There are a number of scenarios that you can follow when you install or update product packages.

The following are some of the factors that might determine your installation scenario:

These are the typical installation scenarios you might follow:

Note that in the latter scenario you can choose to run the IBM Installation Manager program in silent mode to install product packages. For details on running IBM Installation Manager in silent mode, see Installing silently.

Note also that you can install updates at the same time that you install the base product package.

Administrator or non-administrator mode

Use administrator mode when you have administrative privileges in Windows and root privileges in Linux, and the OS X operating system. You can administer and manage Installation Manager and packages. You can install packages in a common location that is accessible by all users on a system. You can install only one administrator instance of Installation Manager on a computer.

Use nonadministrator mode to install packages in a location that is accessible only by the user who installs Installation Manager. The packages are installed with nonadministrator rights. You can install only one instance of Installation Manager for each user on a computer.

The Launchpad uses administrator mode. To install product packages as a non-administrator, you must manually run the userinst program in the InstallerImage_platform folder from the electronic image instead of running the launchpad program.

Note: For OS X:

If 'Application can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer' message appears, this is due to the OS X Gatekeeper feature. Use Ctrl+click or right-click and select Open to be prompted to open it.

If 'Application is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Trash.' message appears, this is due to the OS X Gatekeeper feature. See http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21657260 for more information.

If not able to start the Userinst.app from Finder, open Terminal and invoke disk1/InstallerImage_macosx_cocoa_x86_64/Userinst.app/Contents/MacOS/userinst.

Installing using web install option from product trial site

In this installation scenario, you follow the steps to do the installation using the web install method from the product trial site: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/downloads/r/rdi/
