Transforming to physical with CA ERwin

From the logical data model of the Atomic Warehouse Model (AWM) or the Dimensional Warehouse Model (DWM), you can create a physical data model.

Before you begin

A valid logical data model of your AWM or DWM in CA ERwin must exist.

Procedure

  1. Import the glossary.
    1. Open the model with CA ERwin.
    2. Select Tools > Naming Standards.
    3. Select the Glossary tab.
    4. Click Import and choose the NamingGlossary.csv file provided in the same folder as the model.
    5. Select Match Whole words only.
    6. Select File > Save As and enter NamingGlossary.nsm as filename.
    7. Go to File > Exit to close the naming standard editor.
  2. Go to Tools > Model Naming Options.
  3. In the General tab, select Use file: and browse to select the NamingGlossary.nsm created in the step above.
  4. In the Logical tab, change the maximum length for Relationships to 128.
  5. In the Name Mapping tab, select the Use Glossary check box for Entity to table, Domains and Attribute to Column.
  6. In the Macro Name cell for Entity to table, enter %upper(%EntityName()).
  7. In the Macro Name cell for Relationships, enter FK_%RelId.
  8. For Special Characters choose Replace in the drop-down box.
  9. Replace with _ character.

  10. Click Reset Names... to convert the names to the abbreviated names from the naming glossary file.
    Note: the model must be physical.
  11. Click OK to close the dialog box.
  12. Go to Action > Design Layer > Derive New Model.
  13. In the Target Model tab, choose Physical and specify the correct database and version.
  14. In the Object Selection tab, tick the relevant subject areas.
  15. Click Derive to create a new model in CA ERwin.
  16. Save the newly created physical model as XML.

Results

This creates a physical data model file (XML) of your AWM or DWM.
