Preparing to install an ESLL or ESLS storage enclosure
To prepare to install an ESLL or ESLS storage enclosure, complete the steps in this procedure.
Procedure

Determine the level of software that you need to support the
enclosure.
For instructions, see the Power Systems Prerequisites website.

Determine whether you can add your enclosure
to a host system when the system power is turned on by reviewing the following information. You can
add your enclosure when the system power is turned on and when logical partitions are active if you
have one of the following configurations:
- Your system is managed by an IBM® Hardware Management Console (HMC).
- Your system is not managed by an HMC, but has only
one partition, and that partition is running the IBM i
operating system.Note: If you do not have one of these configurations, you must power off the system to add an enclosure.

Choose one of the following options:
- If your ESLL or ESLS storage enclosure arrived to your site
preinstalled in a rack, continue with one of the following procedures:
- If you want to install disk drives or solid-state drives (SSDs), continue with Optional: Install disk drives or SSDs in an ESLL or ESLS storage enclosure.
- If you want to connect your ESLL or ESLS storage enclosure to your system, continue with Connecting an ESLL or ESLS storage enclosure to your system.
- If your ESLL or ESLS storage enclosure
needs to be installed into a rack, ensure that you have the following items before you start your
installation:
- Phillips screwdrivers
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Rack with two Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) units of contiguous
space.Note: If you do not have a rack that is installed, install the rack. For instructions, see Racks and rack features.
- If your ESLL or ESLS storage enclosure arrived to your site
preinstalled in a rack, continue with one of the following procedures:
