Assigning paging devices

You can assign paging devices by using either the Hardware Management Console (HMC) or the Integrated Virtualization Manager (IVM).

If you use the HMC to assign paging devices, the system selects a paging device when the shared memory partition is activated for the first time. The system uses the selected paging device as long as it is available when the partition is activated. If the selected paging device is unavailable at the time the partition is activated or is in use by another partition, the system selects a new paging device.

If you use the IVM to assign paging devices, you must remove a paging device from the previous partition to reuse it for another partition. You can specify the paging device for each partition by using the IVM command line.
Note: When you use the IVM, you must assign paging devices for each shared memory partition when partitions are either activated or deactivated, unless you have configured the paging devices manually by using the IVM command line.
