If the required software is not installed, see the following websites to download it, and then install it before continuing:

If your system is managed by the HMC, use the HMC to replace the front fan cage in the server. For instructions, see Exchanging a part using the Hardware Management Console.

If you do not have an HMC, complete the following steps to replace the front fan cage:

  1. Install the front fan cage as follows:
    1. Feed the fan cage cable through the chassis wall opening as shown in Figure 1.
    2. To place the front fan cage into its location, angle the rear of the fan cage down to allow the fan cable to clear the rear edge of the chassis opening, and then gently lower the fan cage into position.
    3. Tighten the two screws (A) in the clockwise direction at the bottom of the fan cage.
    4. Install the screw (B) at the top of the fan cage.
    5. Install the front fans. For instructions, see Replacing the 8231-E2B, 8231-E1C, 8231-E1D, 8231-E2C, 8231-E2D, or 8268-E1D system unit fans.
    6. Close the fan cover.

  5. For a rack-mounted system, put the system into the operating position. For instructions, see Placing the rack-mounted 8231-E2B, 8231-E1C, 8231-E1D, 8231-E2C, 8231-E2D, or 8268-E1D system into the operating position.
  6. Reconnect the power source.
  7. Start the system as described in Starting a system or logical partition.
  8. Verify the installed part:
