Replacing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD system unit fan

Use this procedure to replace the system unit fan.

Before installing or replacing a feature, ensure that the software required to support the feature is installed on your system. For information about software prerequisites, see IBM Prerequisite (http://www-912.ibm.com/e_dir/eServerPrereq.nsf). If the required software is not installed, see the following websites to download it, and then install it before continuing:

If your system is managed by an HMC, use the HMC to complete the steps for replacing the fan in the server. For instructions, see Replacing a part using the Hardware Management Console.

If you do not have an HMC, complete the following steps to replace a system fan:

  1. Complete the prerequisite. For instructions, see Before you begin.
  2. Attach the wrist strap.
    Attention:
    • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging your hardware.
    • When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
    • If you do not have a wrist strap, just prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  3. If necessary, remove the fan from its antistatic package.
  4. Install the fan.
    1. Tilt the top of the fan away from the system unit as you place the bottom of the fan into the fan slot (A).
    2. Push straight back on the middle of the fan to move the fan into position, and lock the fan latch bar (B).

  5. Replace the front cover. For instructions, see Replacing the front cover.
  6. If you removed the power cords, connect all power cords to the unit you are servicing.
  7. Start the system for a nonconcurrent repair. For instructions, see Starting the system or logical partition.
  8. Verify the installed part. For instructions, see Verifying the installed part.
