Use this procedure to install a Universal Serial Bus (USB)
device.
Before installing or replacing a feature, ensure that
the software required to support the feature is installed on your
system.
For information about software prerequisites,
see IBM Prerequisite.
If the required software is not installed, see the following websites
to download it, and then install it before continuing:
If your system is managed by the an HMC, use the HMC to complete the steps
for installing a feature in the server. For instructions, see Installing a part by using the Hardware Management Console.
If
you do not have an HMC, complete the following steps to install a media device
from the system or partition that controls the media device:
- Identify the system that you will be working on by using
the identify the system process to turn on the system locate (blue)
indicator. For instructions, see Control
panel LEDs.
- Use the service indicator light-emitting diodes (LEDs)
to help identify the part. For instructions, see Identifying
a part.
- Complete the prerequisite tasks. For instructions, see Before you begin.
- Stop the system. For instructions, see Stopping
a system or logical partition.
- Remove the front cover:
- For a rack-mounted system, place the system into the service
position. For instructions, see Placing
a rack-mounted model into the service position.
- Remove the service access cover:
- Disconnect the power source from the system by unplugging
the system. For instructions, see Disconnecting
the power cords.
Note: This system is equipped
with a second power supply. Before continuing with this procedure,
ensure that the power source to the system has been completely disconnected.

- Attach the wrist strap.
Attention: - Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware
to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging your hardware.
- When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures.
A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease
your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical
equipment.
- If you do not have a wrist strap, just prior to removing the product
from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an
unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
- Remove the filler, if present.
- Install the rails onto the media device by using the two
small screws included with your media device. Place the rails on each
side of the media device. Screw the rails into the side of the media
device by using the lower screw hole.

the rails on the media device
- Plug the USB and power cables to the system backplane as
shown in the following figure.
- Insert the loose end of the cables through the media bay
in the chassis so they are hanging out the front of the system.
- Attach the media cables (A) to the
back of the drive as shown in the following figure.
Note: Ensure
that the cables are routed such that they do not interfere with the
future service operations, if any.
- Insert the media device (B) into
the system and push it until you feel the latches (C) lock
in place.
- Replace the service access cover:
- Replace the front cover:
- For a rack-mounted system, place the system into the operating
position, as described in Placing
a rack-mounted model into the operating position.
- Connect the power cords to the system.
- Start the system. For instructions, see Starting the system or logical partition.
- Verify the installed part:
- If you replaced the part because of a failure,
verify the installed part. For instructions, see Verifying
a repair.
- If you installed the part for any other reason, verify the installed
part. For instructions, see Verifying
the installed part.
