Error description

  • You work with IBM SPSS Statistics 20 and create a hierarchical
cluster analysis with Dendogram plot. However, sometimes when
you have certain case numbers (e.g. 49 cases in the file) you
see that the values for the dendogram axis for the string
variable which you used as label variable for the plot are
displayed in scientific notification instead of the actual
    string value content.
This does not happen for all files and case numbers. In most
cases the axis label display on the dendogram is correct.

This was reported to IBM SPSS Development. If you encounter the
    issue there is a workaround:

Double click on the dendrogram in the viewer to open it in chart
editor. Select the Y-Axis (either by clicking on it or
selecting the "Y" button), and open the properties window if it
is not open (edit->properties). Select the Scale tab. On the
lower-left corner of the Scale tab is a text box to hold the
"Lower margin (%)". Change that value to "0", and click Apply.
The axis labels will be displayed properly then.

    Other workarounds are:

    1) Set the upper and lower margins to 1% rather than 2%
    2) Set the Y-axis tick marks to have scientific notation: Never
(instead of default of when needed)
    3) Added a relabel for 0 and #of cases + 1 to relabel to empty
    string
