Error description

  • Certain tape operations performed against an external library
may result in SAN device discovery being triggered. This
behavior can occur when any of the following operations are
    performed against an external library:

       o tape dismounts
       o volume deletions
o move drmedia (when a checkout occurs)
       o query drmedia

When any combination of these events occur within a short amount
of time this can result in the appearance of a hang condition as
the NAV mutex is held by the NaDiscoverThread for the entire
duration of the device discovery operation:

       Thread 33, Parent 1: NaDiscoverThread, Storage 162884,
       AllocCnt 414651 HighWaterAmt 214321
        tid=a21, ptid=1, det=1, zomb=0, join=0, result=0, sess=0
Holding mutex NAV->mutex (0x1125a9ce8), acquired at
         nadiscvr.c(2311)

Other operations waiting to acquire this mutex will have to wait
until the device discovery operations have completed.

Local fix

  • 1. Increase the value for the SANREFRESHTIME parameter to allow
the SAN device information to be cached, thereby eliminating
the need for device discovery operations to be performed as
       frequently
    2. Disable SANDISCOVERY, if necessary
