Error description

  • After a change of the Tivoli Storage Manager server LBPROTECT
option, the server might report ' Incompatible continuation
volume' messages and fail data movement or client backup
    operations.

The following message sequence is seen during reclamation after
changing LBPROTECT from NO to WRITEONLY:

ANR8337I LTO volume <VOL001L5> mounted in drive DRIVE1
    (/dev/DRIVE1_f0).
ANR9001W Volume <VOL001L5> does not have logical block
    protection.
    ANR0513I Process 5 opened output volume <VOL001L5>.
    ..
    ANR8341I End-of-volume reached for LTO volume <VOL001L5>.
    ANR0515I Process 5 closed volume <VOL001L5>.
    ..
    ANR0408I Session 1526 started for server <SERVER> (AIX) (Tcp/Ip)
    for library sharing.
ANR0409I Session 1526 ended for server <SERVER> (AIX).
    ANR0408I Session 1528 started for server <SERVER> (AIX) (Tcp/Ip)
    for library sharing.
ANR8336I Verifying label of LTO volume <VOL001L5> in drive
    DRIVE1 (/dev/DRIVE1_f0).
ANR0409I Session 1528 ended for server <SERVER> (AIX).
ANR8337I LTO volume <VOL002L5> mounted in drive DRIVE2
    (/dev/DRIVE2_f5).
ANR1340I Scratch volume <VOL002L5> is now defined in storage
    pool <SOMEPOOL>.
    ANR0513I Process 5 opened output volume <VOL002L5>.

ANR0986I Process 5 for SPACE RECLAMATION running in the
BACKGROUND processed <ITEMS> items for a total of <BYTES> bytes
with a completion state of FAILURE at 16:29:48.

In the above example, the message is caused after a filling
volume with LBP=off (ANR9001W) becomes full and the Tivoli
Storage Manager attempts to "span" a file to a new volume with
LBP=on (scratch volume as per ANR1340I). The process fails and
rolls back any transactions causing the "Full Volume" to go back
to Filling Status. When the process (or session) restarts it
will always end in this loop and no data will be moved.

Local fix

  • update all volumes in the affected storage pool with status
filling to readonly before changing the LBPROTECT option:
    UPDate Volume * ACCess=READOnly WHEREDEVclass=<DEVC>
    WHERESTatus=FILling
