S837-08 received for TAPE processing.

Troubleshooting

Problem

S837-08 received for TAPE processing.

Symptom

S837-08 was received at exactly 56 tape volumes of a 70 volume tape dataset. Error Message IEC028I 837-08,IFG05510,cdstc,cdstc,ddname,unit,volser,data.set.name.g0001v00 IEC028 837-08 indicates: 08 The volume whose serial number is ser was not found in the JFCB and no address was found for the JFCB extension in the SWA. Specify more volume serial numbers, or a larger volume count in the VOL parameter of the DD statement. See z/OS MVS JCL User's Guide for a description of the rules for coding volume count. This situation can also occur if an OPEN TYPE=J macro is used to open the data set after the volume serial number is changed and the JFCB is not updated in the SWA because bit 4 of the JFCBTSDM field of the JFCB is set to one.

Resolving The Problem

Changed the policy setting for the capacity of the virtual tapes. The sending site was set higher (eg. 800 meg) than the receiving side. When the transmission was hitting the destination the policy was to trigger to use a lower capacity tape (eg. 400 meg). Although, the VOL=(,,,99) was used, the transmission consistently failed at volume 56. On the receiving side, many of the large transfers were spanning hundreds of volumes prior to updating the policy.
