"Standard error Number 5 ... (0x800A0005): Invalid procedure call or argument" when running Controller Excel-link report (fGetVal formulas, fetching values with F9 / F10)

Troubleshooting

Problem

User opens an Excel-based report, which contains fGetVal (or fExpVal) formulae. User runs/refreshes the spreadsheet report (for example by pressing F9 / F10). User receives error message when fetching values. The report may have worked OK in the past.

Symptom

Standard Error
Number: 5
Source: FrangoDirect.ExcelLinkD.FetchValues#ControllerProxyClient
Description: System.Web.Services.Protocsl.SoapException: Server was unable to process request -->System.RuntimeInteropServices.COMException (0x800A0005): Invalid procedure call or argument.

Cause

Code production problem (defect PM39367) in Controller 10.1.1 and earlier.

This is only triggered when an invalid period format (or invalid periods) used as input for a fGetVal formula.

  • For example, in one real-life example the user had incorrectly (typo) entered the figure "0819" as the period (instead of the correct period 0809)

Resolving The Problem

Fix:

Upgrade to Controller 10.2 or later.

Workaround:

Check if an invalid period format (or invalid period) has been entered in a cell.
