Process overview
You must follow these steps to obtain feature activation codes for your DS6000 series machine:
- Select DS6000 series machine to enter information about your DS6000 series machine. You will need the following information from the DS Storage Manager application to perform this activity:
- Machine model number
- Machine serial number
- Machine signature
- View machine summary to assign order confirmation codes to your machine and to review the functions present on your machine. You must assign order confirmation codes to your machine whenever you receive a DS6000 series function authorization document for a newly acquired function or an authorization level increase for an existing function. You will need the order confirmation code(s) printed on your DS6000 series function authorization document(s) to perform this activity.
- Manage activations to select the license scope and assigned value for your functions. You must perform this activity upon initial activation of a function.
- Retrieve activation codes to obtain the feature activation codes to apply to your machine using the DS Storage Manager.
When you complete your activities for the selected machine and want to work with a different machine, return to the Select DS6000 Series Machine page and enter the information for the next machine.
Select DS6000 series machine
The following information is required to select the machine you want to work with:
- Machine serial number
- Machine signature
You will also need to enter the model number the first time you access DSFA for a given machine.
You can find all this information in the DS Storage Manager application under storage unit properties.

Assign order confirmation code: Functions become associated to a machine by assigning order confirmation codes. Order confirmation code assignment is a required activity that must be performed:
- The first time you access a machine.
- When you acquire a new function.
- When you acquire an authorization level increase for an existing function.
You will receive an order confirmation code for each DS6000 licensed function feature (or RPQ) number you acquire. Order confirmation codes are printed on the DS6000 series function authorization document. This document is provided to you by IBM or an authorized IBM Business Partner.
The order confirmation code contains information regarding the feature number you acquired. When you assign the order confirmation code to a machine, the feature number it represents is added to the machineÂ’s record in the DSFA database and the functions list displayed below is updated.
Each order confirmation code represents one feature number, at a quantity of one. For example, if you acquire a quantity of two (2) feature number #1000, you will receive two (2) order confirmation codes. You must assign both order confirmation codes to your machine in order to update your machine record in the DSFA database with a quantity of two feature number #1000.
An order confirmation code can be assigned to only one machine. Once it has been assigned, it cannot be removed, reassigned, or transferred to a different machine.
You need to perform this action only once per order confirmation code. The assignment information is permanently stored in the DSFA database.
Note: You will not be able to retrieve your feature activation codes for a new machine, a newly acquired function, or an authorization level increase until you assign the associated order confirmation codes to your machine.
Functions: The function list is provided for reference purposes and displays the following information for functions present on your machine:
- Feature number
- Feature description
- Order confirmation code
- Total license value (authorization level)
The first time you access a machine, a message will be displayed indicating that there are no functions assigned to the machine.
Functions become associated to the machine by assigning order confirmation codes. When you assign an order confirmation code, the assignment information is permanently stored in the DSFA database and this list is updated.
The total license is the function authorization level. It represents your extent of IBM authorization (license size) for the function. The units represent physical capacity, where a TB (terabyte) equals one trillion bytes.
Feature activation codes are generated only for the functions displayed on this page. You cannot retrieve a feature activation code for a function until you assign its order confirmation code to your machine and the function appears on this page.
Manage activations
Managing activations refers the selection of license scope and assigned license value. These values must be specified for all functions to obtain your feature activation codes.
To manage your activations, the following information is displayed for functions present on your machine:
- Total license
- License scope
- Assigned value
Total license: The total license is the function authorization level. It represents your extent of IBM authorization (license size) for the function.
This value is the sum of the units (terabytes) stated within the feature number description. The units represent physical capacity, where a TB (terabyte) equals one trillion bytes.
You can view the feature numbers present on your machine on the View Machine Summary page.
License scope: License scope refers to the type of storage, and therefore the type of servers, that the function can be used with:
- ALL
- The function can be used with data from all attached servers.
- CKD (Count Key Data)
- The function can be used with data only from FICON-attached servers.
- FB (Fixed Block)
- The function can be used with data only from Fibre Channel-attached servers.
If a function has only a single license scope option, DSFA will default to that value. If a function has multiple license scope options, you must select a license scope before you can obtain your feature activation codes. Once you select a license scope, the value will be stored in the DSFA database.
You can change the license scope at any time and obtain a new feature activation code. Application of the new feature activation code to your machine is a non disruptive activity for the following license scope changes:
- Changing CKD to ALL
- This activates the function for use with Fibre Channel-attached servers, while the function continues to remain activated for use with FICON-attached servers.
- Changing FB to ALL
- This activates the function for use with FICON-attached servers, while the function continues to remain activated for use with Fibre Channel-attached servers.
Applying the new feature activation code for the following license scope changes is a disruptive activity and requires a power cycle of the machine before the change is effective. These license scope changes are disruptive because they result in the deactivation (disablement) of the function for a storage type. See licensed function deactivation for additional information.
- Changing ALL to CKD
- This deactivates the function for use with Fibre Channel-attached servers, while the function continues to remain activated for use with FICON-attached servers.
- Changing ALL to FB
- This deactivates the function for use with FICON-attached servers, while the function continues to remain activated for use with Fibre Channel-attached servers.
- Changing CKD to FB
- This deactivates the function for use with FICON-attached servers and activates the function for use with Fibre Channel-attached servers.
- Changing FB to CKD
- This deactivates the function for use with Fibre Channel-attached servers and activates the function for use with FICON-attached servers.
Assigned value: The assigned value is the license value (in terabytes) used to generate your feature activation codes. The assigned value will default to the total license unless you previously modified the assigned value to be less than the total license.
The assigned value can be entered to a precision of 0.1 TB (for example, 1.5, 4.6). The assigned value cannot exceed the total license.
You can change the assigned value at any time and obtain a new feature activation code. Applying the new feature activation code to your machine is a non disruptive activity under the following situations:
- The assigned value is increased.
- The assigned value is decreased, but the assigned value exceeds the amount of physical capacity configured in the machine (for the defined license scope).
Applying the new feature activation code is a disruptive activity when the assigned value is changed to zero (0 TB). A value of zero is used to deactivate a licensed function. See licensed function deactivation for additional information.
Retrieve activation codes
Feature activation codes are generated by DSFA using the selections made on the Manage Activations page.
Each function has a unique feature activation code, and each feature activation code activates only one function.
Note: A feature activation code is not uniquely generated for the FICON attachment function. See FICON attachment for additional information.
You must apply the feature activation codes to your machine to technically activate the functions. You can download the codes into a file that can be imported into your machine using the DS Storage Manager application. Alternatively, you can manually enter each feature activation code directly into the DS Storage Manager.
Instructions for applying feature activation codes are found in the IBM System Storage DS6000 Installation, Troubleshooting, and Recovery Guide and the IBM System Storage DS6000 Information Center.
FICON attachment
The FICON attachment function enables a DS6000 series machine to be used with FICON attached servers by allowing the creation of CKD (Count Key Data) volumes on the machine.
This function is not activated through a unique feature activation code. Instead, it is activated through a change in the license scope for operating environment function.
- When this function is present, the operating environment function license scope is set to ALL on the Manage Activations page. A license scope of ALL allows you to use the machine with data from all attached servers.
- When this function is not present, the operating environment function license scope is set to FB on the Manage Activations page. A license scope of FB (Fixed Block) allows you to use the machine with data only from Fibre Channel-attached servers.
Notes:
- If the operating environment license scope is limited to FB on the Manage Activations page, it is because FICON attachment function is not present on your machine. To change the operating environment license scope to ALL so that CKD volumes can be created, you must acquire the FICON attachment feature and assign its order confirmation code to your machine.
- When the FICON attachment function is present on your machine:
- It is displayed on the View Machine Summary page.
- It is not displayed on the Manage Activations page.
- It is not displayed on the Retrieve Activation Codes page and a feature activation code is not provided for the function.
Licensed function deactivation
You can change the assigned value to zero (0.0 TB) to deactivate (disable) a licensed function.
Changing the assigned value will generate a new feature activation code. Applying the new feature activation code to your machine is a disruptive activity and requires a power cycle of the machine before the change is effective.
You can reactivate a deactivated licensed function by changing the assigned value to a non-zero value. This will generate a new feature activation code. Applying the new feature activation code for reactivation is a non disruptive activity.
When you deactivate a licensed function in this manner, the function authorizations acquired for the machine remain intact. This means that you will not be required to repurchase your function authorizations if you want to reactivate the licensed function at a future date.
