As a user, you can manage your COVID-19 health credentials in an encrypted wallet on your phone or as printed records in the form of secure QR codes. This is useful for people who don’t have a smartphone.
What can I expect when using Digital Health Pass at a participating business?
When you visit a participating business, a staff member can use the Digital Health Pass Verifier app to confirm your COVID-19 health credential is valid. They may also ask you for a photo ID that contains your name and birth date to verify the pass belongs to you. Adults may hold COVID-19 health credentials for minors or elders in their care on the same device.
How do I present my pass for entry into a participating business?
You can either present the COVID-19 health credential on your smartphone via the Digital Health Pass Wallet app or show a printed record with a secure QR code. You do not need a smartphone to present a pass.
What personal information can businesses and venues see when they scan my pass?
This may vary depending on an organization’s requirements and how the COVID-19 health credential was generated. So, when a participating business scans your secure QR code, they should only see if your pass is valid, along with any personal information you have consented to be used for your COVID-19 test result or vaccination verification. This may include information necessary to confirm your identity such as your name and birth date.
Will IBM or other businesses that scan my Digital Health Pass have access to my health information?
No, Digital Health Pass represents your personal health information only by a unique set of numbers and letters – shown as a QR code. You are in control of your information, determining what you share, with whom and for what purpose. IBM and verifying organizations cannot access your encrypted wallet.
Is Digital Health Pass a contact tracing application?
No, Digital Health Pass is not a contact tracing app and does not track your location. Simply put, Digital Health Pass is a secured digital alternative to COVID-19 paper vaccination cards or test results and provides a convenient option for you to manage and share that you’ve been vaccinated or tested negative for COVID-19 when you choose.

What data does the Digital Health Pass Verifier app collect or store?
When you register your business, you will share its name, industry and the zip code where it will validate passes. When you scan a pass, the app collects analytics about the type of pass and the result of the scan.
What type of data does IBM collect or store?
IBM does not collect or process any personal information without your consent and does not store any personally identifiable information (PII) on the Digital Health Pass blockchain platform. Personal information remains securely encrypted in the Digital Health Pass Wallet app on an individual’s phone.
Will I be able to access personal health information about my customers or employees?
As a business, the only information you can see through the Digital Health Pass Verifier app is the status of a pass as well as the pass holder’s name and birth date, so it can be verified against a photo ID. This information remains securely encrypted on the verifying organization’s device(s).

What role does blockchain play in the Digital Health Pass solution?
Privacy and security are key to Digital Health Pass. Digital Health Pass is built on IBM Blockchain technology. Digital Health Pass uses a decentralized identity architecture underpinned by W3C Open Software Standards. Unlike traditional data exchange which happens between organizations—with the individual providing consent but fundamentally excluded from the data exchange—a decentralized identity architecture allows the individual to become an active participant, giving them control over their data and the ability to choose how it will be used.
Decentralized identity can allow pharmacies, labs and providers to issue verifiable data to an individual. It allows individuals to share that data or subset and a receiving organization to verify validity of the credential. Trust in the data exchanged is achieved through a distributed ledger, with strict governance practices and verification of signatures. No personal information (PII) is stored in the ledger.
