The IBM Innovation Bootcamp in Cebu is helping students such as Bracel Paderes use technology to create new solutions—her team’s app won an award.

Climate change may be a complex global challenge, and former high school student Bracel Paderes says in a new video that it’s a problem she’s been interested in solving since she was little.

With help from IBM volunteers, she and a team of students have now made their first contribution to solve real-world problems—a mobile app that won an award as part of an IBM initiative.

For two years, IBM volunteers in Cebu, Philippines, have helped Bracel and over 400 other high school students participate in STEM-related activities at the IBM Innovation Bootcamp.

As Andre Pangan, an IBM managing consultant, describes in the video, the Bootcamp provides students with access to technology, tools and practices so they can create solutions where none exist today.

Thirty IBM volunteers on the Innovation Bootcamp project were recognized for their accomplishments by IBM Chairman and CEO Ginni Rometty with the 2018 IBM Volunteer Excellence Award.

Watch the video to hear Bracel and some members of the volunteer team talk about their experiences at the IBM Innovation Bootcamp in Cebu.

The volunteer team from the Philippines is among 15 IBM teams and individuals who are recipients of the fourteenth annual IBM Volunteer Excellence Award. The award is recognition from IBM Chairman and CEO Ginni Rometty and is the highest form of global volunteer recognition given by the company to employees. It includes an IBM grant for the associated not-for-profit partner or school.
