IBM 726 tape reel
The IBM 701 system of 1952 was one of the first computers to use magnetic tape for reading, writing and storing information. Recording at 100 characters per second, this 8-inch-diameter reel was equivalent to 12,500 punched cards. The 701's tape units contained a new vacuum column and magnetic clutch tape drive system and were among the first to use plastic rather than magnetic tape.
