Voluntary performance goals and results

IBM maintains goals covering the range of its environmental programs. In order to continue to drive progress toward a more sustainable future, IBM conducted an extensive review and evaluation of its goals against our business and its intersections with the environment. As a result, we announced IBM's 21 goals for environmental sustainability in 2021. Collectively, they cover energy and climate change, conservation and biodiversity, pollution prevention and waste management, supply chain and value chain, and our global environmental management system.

For more details on the goals and results below, please see our latest IBM 2021 ESG Report and Addendum.

IBM's 2021 Voluntary Environmental Performance Goals and Results

Energy and climate change 2017 2018 2018 2020 2021
IBM total energy consumption in megawatt-hours 4,845,695 4,666,514 4,455,805 4,118,636 3,804,164
Renewable electricity procurement as % of total electricity consumption (goal 75% by 2025 and 90% by 2030)1 39.0 37.9 47.5 59.3 64.2
GHG emissions reduction as % of 2010 base year (goal 65% by 2025)2 25.1 27.2 35.3 53.9 61.63
Total GHG emissions covered by our goal in metric tons of CO2-equivalent 1,458,825 1,417,346 1,260,187 897,153 697,966
1Renewable electricity procurement includes contracted purchases and renewable electricity that automatically comes to IBM via routine grid power.
2GHG emissions reduction data is adjusted for acquisitions and divestitures. During 2021, IBM increased its GHG emissions reduction goal and changed its base year from 2005 to 2010 to better align our reporting with the work of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). While our 2021 ESG Report provided emissions results from 2020 (and before) compared to base year 2005, the results for 2017 through 2021 in this table are compared to the updated base year of 2010.
3For our reporting of 2021 GHG emissions reduction results, we adjusted our 2010 base year emissions so that it only reflects 10 months of operations for our former managed infrastructure services business. In this way, we do not take credit for reductions due to that business's separation from IBM.

Water conservation 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021
% annual reduction in water withdrawals at data centers and other large IBM locations in water-stressed regions (goal year-to-year reduction) 2.9 0.4 2.0 6.7 1.2

Nonhazardous waste landfill and incineration avoidance 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021
Total generated (metric tons x 1,000) 36.7* 34.0* 31.5* 22.1* 20.7
% by weight diverted from landfill or incineration (goal 90% by 2025) 87.7* 89.4* 87.3* 83.3* 94.2
% by weight of diverted waste sent to waste-to-energy processes (goal no more than 10%, established in 2021) -- -- -- -- 9.7
*Some batteries managed appropriately as hazardous waste were erroneously reported as nonhazardous waste during 2017-2020. Although the change is extremely small, we have updated the results with the quantity of this hazardous waste removed.

Product reuse and recycling 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021
% by weight of total IT product waste sent by IBM's product end-of-life operations to landfill or incineration for treatment (goal not to exceed a combined 3% by weight) 0.7 0.7 0.8 0.5 0.3
