There is a whole class of problems that are too difficult for even the largest and most powerful computers that exist today to solve. These exponential challenges include everything from simulating the complex interactions of atoms and molecules to optimizing supply chains. But quantum computers could enable us to solve these problems, unleashing untold opportunities for business. IBM Director of Research Arvind Krishna will describe how quantum computers have become a reality at IBM. He’ll discuss what companies are doing to become “quantum ready” for a new era of computing. He’ll also present the roadmap for IBM Q, the first commercial quantum program that is expected to deliver powerful results for businesses within a few years.

Arvind Krishna is senior vice president, Hybrid Cloud, and director of IBM Research. In this role, he leads the company’s hybrid cloud business, including strategy, product design, offering development, marketing, sales and service. He also guidesIBM’s technical strategyin core and emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, quantum computing, cloud platform services, data-driven solutions and blockchain. Previous roles include general manager of IBMSystems and Technology Group development and manufacturing, general manager of IBMInformation Managementand vice president of strategy for IBM Software. Arvindhas an undergraduate degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Jerry ChowManager and Distinguished Research Staff Member, Experimental Quantum Computing, IBM Research, IBM
Jerry Chow is an experimental physicist and the manager of IBM Research's Experimental Quantum Computing group at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York. His group explores applications of novel quantum devices to computing, specifically on building networks of superconducting qubits as part of IBM Q systems, and ultimately toward the implementation of a fault-tolerant quantum computer. Jerry has co-authored many scientific publications on quantum mechanics, including a 2017 Nature cover story featuring the breakthrough simulation of the largest molecule ever performed by a quantum computer. He received an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship for his quantum processor with superconducting qubits work and made the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2011. Jerry has a PhD in Physics from Yale University, and MS in Applied Mathematics and AB in Physics from Harvard University. Kohei ItohDean, Faculty of Science and Technology, Keio University
Kohei M. Itoh is the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Dean of the Graduate School of Science and Technology at Keio University. He graduated from Keio University and received his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. He joined Keio University as a faculty member in 1995 and became full professor in 2007. His main focus of research has been on physics of semiconductors, quantum computing, and quantum sensing, which led to more than 300 journal publications. He has served on a variety of executive boards including the Physical Society of Japan and the Japan Society of Applied Physics. Currently he is a Member of Science Council of Japan representing a large body of scientists in Japan. He is a recipient of the Japan IBM Prize (2006) and the JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) Prize (2009). He is also the founder of the IBM Q Hub @ Keio University.Twitter LinkedIn
Talia GershonSenior Manager, AI Challenges and Quantum Experiences, IBM
Dr. Talia Gershon joined the Physical Sciences department at IBM Research in July of 2012 after earning her Bachelor’s in Materials Science from MIT (2008) and her PhD from the University of Cambridge (2012), where she was a Gates Scholar. In the fall of 2016, Talia was appointed to a position as Technical Assistant to Dr. Dario Gil, VP of AI and Quantum Computing Research, in which she supported IBM’s AI and quantum computing research strategies. During her time in that role, she wrote the Beginner’s Guide to Quantum Computing, which introduces the fundamentals of quantum computing without assuming prior knowledge. She also played a role in shaping IBM’s quantum engagement activities. Talia now leads a team responsible for designing and building IBM’s current and future cloud- and web-based experiences for quantum computing. SeongJun ParkVice President, Samsung Electronics (Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology)
Seongjun Park, Ph.D. is Vice President at Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, Samsung Electronics. He leads the Nano Electronics Lab, which includes Graphene and 2D material-based electronics, Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy, micro-display, sound sensor, neuromorphic process, and quantum computing projects. His primary interest is in nano structured materials and its development and usage in electronic, opto electronic, and energy application devices.
He received a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from Seoul National University (1994) and a Ph.D. from Stanford University (2003), where he was also a research associate for two years. Dr. Park joined Intel in 2005, where he investigated material selections for front and back-end lines based on quantum mechanical simulations. He's been with Samsung since 2010.
