IBM Accelerate offers high potential undergraduate students a virtual learning experience delivered through weekly live sessions over eight weeks during the summer.

The program will identify and equip students with the knowledge and readiness they need to be prepared for future consideration of opportunities within the technology industry.

About the Program

8-week experience

Apply and take part in our 8-week learning program open to students who meet our eligibility criteria. Delivered through weekly sessions (three-hours in the evening) by industry-leading IBM professionals, you will be able to hone your skills for the future and build your network.

Foundational Skills

Employers agree that although technical skills are important, foundational skills are what make an employee successful in the world of work. Build and learn more about the kinds of skills that will help you stand out in an interview and navigate the workforce!

Track Based Learning

Focus on the knowledge and skills most applicable to your interests and career aspirations. A track-based learning approach will allow you to dig deeper on what it takes to succeed in the skills track of your choice! Hover over the section below to learn more about each track area.

Networking & Coaching

Through IBM Accelerate, you'll have many opportunities to build relationships and learn. In addition to networking, you'll be aligned to an IBMer who will be your Accelerate coach throughout the program. Your coach will help guide you as you learn about IBM and map out your career journey moving forward!

You will build the foundational skills needed to be creative, data-driven practitioners that tell stories that resonate with audiences and drive business results.
Preferred/recommended majors:
Marketing, Communications, Marketing Research, Digital Marketing, Market Strategy, Analytics, Statistics, Advertising, Consumer Behavior, Public Relations, or similar.

Marketing and Communications

You will grow your programming skills while enhancing your competencies and understanding of coding assessment platforms. You will expand your ability to work in agile teams, think critically, problem-solve and sharpen your logic skills.
Preferred/recommended majors:
Computer Science, Computer Eng., Electrical Eng., Information Technology, or similar.

Software Developer

You will grow your understanding of various opportunities within Hardware Development, overall system design, how system performance targets are achieved, and the design of automation and simulation tools.
Preferred/recommended majors:
Electrical Engineering, Computer Eng., Mechanical Eng., Chemical Eng., Material Science, Physics, or related majors

Hardware Developer

You will grow your technical and interpersonal skills to prepare you for a future career as a trusted client advisor and problem-solver.
Preferred/recommended majors:
Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Design, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, or similar

Technical Sales

You will learn how to infuse design excellence and quality user experience with what it means to be a designer. From the foundations of UX, to visual design, and design research while understanding how to design with intent and apply design skills to emerging tech.
Preferred/recommended majors:
Design, media, and art-related majors; Adjacent disciplines

Designer

You will build technical and interpersonal skills as you gain an understanding of how consultants help organizations better predict, automate, secure, and modernize their business.
Preferred/recommended majors:
Computer Science or related majors; Data Science or related majors; Design or related majors; Business or related majors

Eligibility

At IBM, we are seeking those who are striving to build a better future. This is where your drive meets vision. Putting your time and development first, this program is designed to put you in the driver's seat of your career allowing you to focus on what you are truly passionate about while providing exposure to the foundational skills required for career success.

  • This program is open to all first and second-year undergraduate students. All candidates who meet the above criteria may apply. We especially encourage applications from individuals currently underrepresented in the STEM and technology field, including Black, Native Americans, African Americans, Hispanics/Latinxs.
  • Participants must supply their own computer/laptop with internet access for use throughout the program.
  • Participants must be enrolled in a post-secondary education institute (i.e. college or university)
  • Participation is open to all majors and areas of study, although participants are encouraged to have an interest in STEM and technology.

FAQs

What are the benefits I can gain from participating in IBM Accelerate? Will I be paid for participation in the program?

IBM Accelerate is an unpaid virtual learning opportunity. Through completion of IBM Accelerate, participants will gain invaluable experiences in the form of a few key elements, including:

  • You will also gain valuable foundational and technical skills within a profession that interests you! You'll learn what it means to work in the corporate world within that profession, enabling you with the knowledge to guide your career and achieve your professional goals. You'll develop relationships with IBMers and have the opportunity to network with other Accelerate participants. 
  • Participants who complete the program will be awarded an IBM digital credential (badge) and may be considered for IBM internship opportunities. Please note, IBM does not provide visa sponsorship for internship positions now or in the future.
  • Overall, we're confident we've developed a unique experience that will truly accelerate your professional network, skillset, and career moving forward! Acceptance into the program and participation does not imply current employment nor guarantee future employment with IBM. 

What does the application process for IBM Accelerate entail?

The IBM Accelerate application will be posted in mid-January 2022, and those who have registered their interest in the Accelerate Program will be invited to review the posting and formally apply. During the application process, you will need to upload a resume, confirm your area of study and expected graduation date, and select your Accelerate Track preferences. Our team will review your application, and if selected to proceed, you will be sent a short follow-up video and written assessment. Those who are selected to participate in the Accelerate Program will receive an invitation by email and need to respond to confirm their participation within 7 days. All applicants will receive an update on their application status by the end of April 2022.

Can I participate if I'm not a first or second year student?

This program is open to all undergraduate students, but the curriculum is developed for Sophomores that will be rising Juniors next summer (specifically with December 2023 - June 2024 graduation dates). Priority will be given to rising Juniors.

Can I participate in the IBM Accelerate Program more than once?

No, the IBM Accelerate Program is designed to be a one-time opportunity for students.

When will the weekly sessions happen?

  • This program will run from June 6th - August 1, 2022
  • Mondays, 7:00pm – 8:00pm EST: Foundational Skills Sessions
  • Wednesdays, 6:00pm – 8:00pm EST: Track Learning Sessions

What if I have a job that I was planning on working this summer- can I still participate in IBM Accelerate?

Yes! We have designed this virtual learning experience to accommodate participants who may have other commitments like classes, jobs, or summer internships. Sessions will be delivered in the evenings.

Do I need to be in a specific US location to participate?

No. All programming is virtual, so all you need is a computer and internet connection. However, this is a US-based program, and you must be enrolled in a US-based post secondary education institute.

What happens at the end of the program?

  • Participants who complete the program will be awarded an IBM digital credential (badge) and may be considered for IBM internship opportunities. Please note, IBM does not provide visa sponsorship for internship positions now or in the future.
