Upgrading the IBM MQ Operator for IBM Cloud Pak for Integration users

Upgrade deployments of the IBM® MQ Operator where an IBM Cloud Pak® for Integration license is used.

Before you begin

Important: This task is for IBM Cloud Pak for Integration users. This includes if you have deployed at least one of your queue managers under a IBM Cloud Pak for Integration license. If this does not apply to you, see Upgrading the IBM MQ Operator.

About this task

If you are upgrading to the CD version of the IBM MQ Operator (version 3.8.1) you must first upgrade to the v3.2 SC2 channel as described in the following instructions.

If your IBM MQ Operator is version 3.3.x, jump to step 2.c of the Upgrade to the CD Channel section to complete an intermediary upgrade to version 3.4.1 before upgrading to 3.8.0. This step is required because the IBM Cloud Pak for Integration upgrade tool does not support version 3.3.0 of the IBM MQ Operator.

If your IBM MQ Operator is version 3.4.0 or higher, jump to step 2.d of the Upgrade to the CD Channel section.

Procedure

  1. Optional: Upgrade to the v3.2 SC2 channel.

Complete one or more of the following options to upgrade your IBM MQ Operator to the Support Cycle 2 (SC2) channel of the IBM MQ Operator only:

  2. Upgrade to the CD channel (v3.8).
    1. Optional: Upgrade to the 3.2.x deployment of the IBM MQ Operator

Follow the previous main step to upgrade to the 3.2.x deployment of the IBM MQ Operator.

    2. Optional: Upgrade a 3.2.x deployment of the IBM MQ Operator

Follow the steps in Upgrading from version 16.1.0 or 16.1.2 in the IBM Cloud Pak for Integration documentation.

    3. Optional: Upgrade a 3.3.x deployment of the IBM MQ Operator

If your IBM MQ Operator is currently at version 3.3.x, complete the following steps to update your operator to 3.4.1 then proceed to step 2.d to upgrade to 3.8.1.

      1. If your cluster is in a restricted (air-gapped) network environment, mirror the IBM MQ images.
Complete the steps in the relevant subtopic of the Mirroring images for an air-gapped cluster section in the IBM Cloud Pak for Integration documentation, with the following changes:
        • Use only the following values, where <V.R.M> is the version of the IBM MQ Operator that you are upgrading to:
          export OPERATOR_PACKAGE_NAME=ibm-mq
          export OPERATOR_VERSION=<V.R.M>
        • Omit section 3.5 (Configure the cluster) because the connection to the image registry should have been set up during previous installations or upgrades.
For information about the contents of the IBM MQ CASE, which is used for air-gap installations and upgrades, see IBM MQ CASE for air-gap install and upgrade on Red Hat OpenShift.
      2. Upgrade your IBM MQ Operator to 3.4.1.
      3. Upgrade your IBM MQ instances.

To receive the latest features and security fixes, upgrade the IBM MQ Operand (queue manager container image). See Upgrading an IBM MQ queue manager using Red Hat OpenShift.

    4. Optional: Upgrade a 3.4.x or 3.5.x deployment of the IBM MQ Operator

If your IBM MQ Operator is currently at version 3.4.x or 3.5.x, complete the following steps to update your operator to 3.7.2 then proceed to step 2.e to upgrade to the latest CD version (3.8.1).

      2. Upgrade your IBM MQ Operator and IBM MQ instances.

Follow the steps in Upgrading from version 16.1.0 or 16.1.2 in the IBM Cloud Pak for Integration documentation to upgrade to version 3.7.2 of the IBM MQ Operator on IBM Cloud Pak for Integration 16.1.2.

    5. Upgrade a 3.6.0 or higher deployment of the IBM MQ Operator

If your IBM MQ Operator is currently at version 3.6.x or higher, complete the following steps to upgrade to the latest CD version (3.8.1).

      2. Upgrade your IBM MQ Operator and IBM MQ instances.

Follow the steps in Upgrading from version 16.1.0 or 16.1.2 in the IBM Cloud Pak for Integration documentation to upgrade to version 3.8.1 of the IBM MQ Operator on IBM Cloud Pak for Integration 16.1.3.
