Removing the system backplane from the 8335-GTC

To remove a system backplane, complete the steps in this procedure.

About this task

As part of the system backplane replacement, the system processor modules, graphics processors, and memory modules are moved from the system backplane to the replacement system backplane. Do not remove those parts from the system backplane until directed. You transfer those components from the system backplane as part of the system backplane replacement procedure. This process keeps the parts safe during the system backplane replacement.

As part of the system processor module replacement, the heat sink is removed. If the system processor module heat sink or if the thermal interface material (TIM) is damaged, it must be replaced. Ensure that you have spare system processor module heatsinks and system processor module TIMs available before proceeding.
CAUTION:
The GPU must not be separated from its heatsink.

Procedure

  1. Attach the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap.
The ESD wrist strap must be connected to an unpainted metal surface until the service procedure is completed, and if applicable, until the service access cover is replaced.
    Attention:
    • Attach an electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap to the front ESD jack, to the rear ESD jack, or to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent the electrostatic discharge from damaging your hardware.
    • When you use an ESD wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. An ESD wrist strap is used for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
    • If you do not have an ESD wrist strap, just prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds. If at any point in this service process you move away from the system, it is important to again discharge yourself by touching an unpainted metal surface for at least 5 seconds before you continue with the service process.
  2. Remove the air baffles (A) and (B) as shown in Figure 1.

  3. Remove the BMC card.
  4. Label and remove the PCIe adapters.
  5. Label and remove the disk and fan signal cable from the system backplane.
  6. Label and remove the fan power cable from the system backplane.
  7. Label and remove the power switch and cable from the system backplane.
  8. Remove one screw (B) from each side of the middle support (A).
    See Figure 2.

  9. Unscrew and remove 22 screws at locations (A), (B), and (C) from the system backplane and supports.

The screw locations are shown in Figure 3. The screws at (A) are the shortest. The screws at (B) and (C) are longer and secure the pipe supports.

The three metal pipe supports at (B) and (C) need to be kept. They are used on the replacement system backplane.

  10. Using the two blue handles (A), lift the system backplane (B) straight up to remove it.
    See Figure 4.
