Replacing a system fan in the 7063-CR1
Learn how to replace the fans in the IBM 7063-CR1 Hardware Management Console system.
Procedure
- Ensure that you have the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap attached. If not, attach it now.
- Replace the rubber fan mounts in the new fan by using the rubber fan mounts from the old
fan. The new fan has rubber mounts (B) as shown in the following
figure. The old fan has rubber mounts (A) as shown.Figure 1. Rubber fan mounts

- From the new fan, remove the inner pin (C) of the fan mounting.
Remove the rubber mounts (D) from the new fan. Figure 2. Removing the new fan mountings

- Remove the rubber mounts (A) from the old fan. Holding the large end of the rubber mount, pinch the inner part of the mount, and slowly pull the rubber mount out from the fan.
- Replace the rubber mounts (A) into the new fan, in their same relative positions as the old fan.
- From the new fan, remove the inner pin (C) of the fan mounting.
Remove the rubber mounts (D) from the new fan.
- With the fan holder lifted, push the fan into the housing as shown in Figure 3. Pass the fan wires through the fan holder. Align the standoffs in the fan with the slots in
the fan holder.Figure 3. Replacing a fan

- Replace the fan holder into the chassis. Align the holes in the fan holder with the pins in the bottom of the chassis as shown in Figure 4. For the fan holder near the cover switch, temporarily
move the cover switch wires out of the way. When the fan holder is seated into the system, replace
the wires that are located next to the fan holder.Figure 4. Aligning the fan holder

- Connect the fan cable to the system backplane, as shown in Figure 5. Figure 5. Connecting fan cables to the system backplane

- Install the system processor air baffle as shown in Figure 6. Insert the edge of the system processor air baffle
into the fan support. Then, carefully press the system processor air baffle down into place. Figure 6. Installing the system processor air baffle

What to do next
Prepare the system for operation. For instructions, see Preparing the 7063-CR1 system for operation after you remove and replace internal parts.
