Installing a SAS tape drive in the 8231-E2B, 8231-E1C, 8231-E1D, 8231-E2C, 8231-E2D, or 8268-E1D

Use this procedure to install a serial-attached SCSI (SAS) media device.

Attention: If you are servicing a failing part, see the service procedures for Removing a SAS tape drive from the 8231-E2B, 8231-E1C, 8231-E1D, 8231-E2C, 8231-E2D, or 8268-E1D. The following procedure is intended for installing a new or upgraded media device.
Before installing or replacing a part, ensure that the software required to support the feature is installed on your system. For information about software prerequisites, see IBM Prerequisite. If the required software is not installed, see the following websites to download and install the software before continuing:

If your system is managed by the Hardware Management Console (HMC), use the HMC to complete the steps for installing a feature in the server. For instructions, see Installing a feature by using the Hardware Management Console.

If you do not have an HMC, complete the following steps to install a media device from the system or partition that controls the media device:

  1. Identify the system that you will be working on by using the identify the system process to turn on the system locate (blue) indicator. For more information, see Enabling enclosure indicators and Control panel LEDs.
  2. Complete the prerequisite tasks. For instructions, see Before you begin.
  3. Stop the system. For instructions, see Stopping a system or logical partition.
  4. Place the system into the service position. For instructions, see Placing a rack-mounted model into the service position.
  5. Disconnect the power source from the system by unplugging the system. For instructions, see Disconnecting the power cords.
Note: This system might be equipped with a second power supply. Before continuing with this procedure, ensure that the power source to the system has been completely disconnected.

  6. Attach the wrist strap.
    Attention:
    • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging your hardware.
    • When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
    • If you do not have a wrist strap, just prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  7. Remove the service access cover. For instructions, see Removing the service access cover from a rack-mounted model.
  8. Remove the filler, if present.
  9. Complete the following steps to install the SAS media device as shown in the following figure:
    1. Confirm that the bracket with tab (A) is installed in the device. This bracket is not attached with screws, clips, or other fastening devices; it is held in place by tabs and friction.
    2. Connect one end of the SAS cable (B) to the media device.
    3. Insert the other end of the cable through the media bay, into the system backplane area.
    4. Push the media device into the system until you feel the latches (A) lock in place as shown in the following figure.

  10. Attach the media-device connections (C) and (D) to the system backplane as shown in the following figure.
    CAUTION:
Ensure that you properly orient the connectors to the socket to prevent misplugging the connectors and to prevent damage to the drive and system backplane.

  11. Replace the service access cover. For instructions, see Installing the service access cover on a rack-mounted 8231-E2B, 8231-E1C, 8231-E1D, 8231-E2C, 8231-E2D, or 8268-E1D system.
  12. Place the system into the operating position. For instructions, see Placing the rack-mounted 8231-E2B, 8231-E1C, 8231-E1D, 8231-E2C, 8231-E2D, or 8268-E1D system into the operating position.
  13. Connect the power cords to the system. For instructions, see Connecting the power cords.
  14. Start the system. For instructions, see Starting the system or logical partition.
  15. Verify the installed part:
