Host sensor releases

Instana monitors a host by using the Instana host sensor. The sensor provides insights into the health and performance of the host.

Release 1.2.4

Host sensor 1.2.4 is released on 14 July 2026.

Improvements

This release adds support for Windows Failover Cluster (WSFC) monitoring. To enable this feature, set wsfcEnabled: true in the host sensor configuration.

This release adds support for monitoring SMB shared drives on Windows Server 2019 and later.

This release improves process handling by batching process collection to prevent overload on systems with high process counts.

This release includes the following enhancements:

  • Improved metric collection for AIX environments where the Instana agent runs without root privileges.
  • Optimized metric collection to reduce unnecessary processing overhead.
  • Increased CPU metric precision for more accurate utilization reporting.

Fixes

This release fixes a deadlock on AIX during process discovery that caused the agent to hang and stop reporting system metrics.

Fixes

This release fixes a rare condition that caused intermittent drops of CPU idle to 0%. It helps ensure more accurate and reliable CPU usage reporting.

Features

Host sensor 1.1.227 introduces the following features to AIX monitoring, focused on better performance, clearer visualizations, and more flexible metric collection:

  • Improved CPU monitoring
    • The main CPU chart now shows User, System, Wait, and Idle metrics.
    • Added a new metric: Stolen Busy cycles.
    • Metrics related to physical processor behavior (Hypervisor calls, Stolen Idle cycles, and Stolen Busy cycles) are displayed in a separate configurable Physical Processor Utilization chart.
      Note:
      Hypervisor calls and Stolen Idle cycles are disabled by default. Re-enable these if you have alerts or events depending on them.
  • Configurable metric collection
    • Collection of per-logical CPU metrics is now configurable.
    • I/O activity and process statistics can now be enabled or disabled.
  • Enhanced storage metrics
    • Improved monitoring for Volume Groups, Physical Volumes, Logical Volumes, and Disks.
    • Storage metrics are now available as time-series data, enabling event and alert creation, historical analysis, and trend visibility.
    • Added used and free percentage metrics for Physical Volumes, providing clearer insight into storage utilization.
    • Optimized data collection by collecting only the top 10 storage entities by default, reducing overhead and improving performance.
  • Enhanced NFS and RPC metrics
    • Added support for NFS version 4.
  • Optimized file system metrics
    • Updated file system metric collection to collect only the top 10 file systems by size and utilization by default, improving performance and focusing on the most relevant file system data.
  • Updated system information
    • Removed System Board UUID and VM UUID to declutter the System information view, reducing clutter and allowing room for more relevant system metrics in future releases. .

To ensure accurate and complete AIX metrics, upgrade to Host sensor 1.1.227 and Instana SaaS 1.0.314.
